Are Blue Buffalo and Wellness about the same quality?

I adopted a dog in November and she's been on Blue Buffalo Life Protection Lamb and Rice formula after I kind of figured she has issues with chicken based food.  She does fine on it, except she's a bit gassy once in a while.

Wellness's Super 5 line has a lamb blend and I was wondering if that's a better choice overall.  Ingredients are pretty similar, price is similar, just wondering if the brand has more pros than Blue.

Re: Are Blue Buffalo and Wellness about the same quality?

  • I highly discourage people from feeding Blue Buffalo.  I disagree with the company philosophy, and I also believe they are hiding what is truly in their foods. Everything the company has done makes me believe they do not have pets best interests in mind.  If you look at the back the nutrition label has a guaranteed analysis but all are in max and mins.  This in itself is ok, except you should be able to call the company to find out the actual nutritional content.  You can with practically any other brand, but Blue considers is proprietary information and refuses to release it.  And based on the ingredients the min fat content is a VERY low min for what is actually in the foods.

  • Our vet had told us Blue and Wellness were comparable and his two highest recommended brands.

  • I would definitely recommend Wellness over Blue Buffalo; I just think it's priced more accordingly to quality and the BB costs more than it's really worth.

  • I don't have an opinion on the quality of BB since I've never looked into it or fed it, but I feed Wellness Core (their grain-free line that has a fish-based "Ocean" variety with no chicken), and I have been very happy with it.  It's a bit pricey (~$60 for a 26 lb. bag), but both of my dogs do extremely well on it.  Not every food will work for every dog, so you might want to buy a small bag of the food you choose to see if it is a good match for your pup. Also, depending on your dog's age, there may be considerations as to when it's appropriate to feed grain-free.  GL!

  • I tried both of these brands with our pup and after a week or two he refuses to continue eating.  We switch between Orijen and Acana brand grain free bags.  They are VERY pricey...$18-25 for 5 pounds but you can see a difference in his coat and he loves eating them
