Planning a vacation

DH and I are currently planning a vacation out to Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco for the fall.  I've done a good amount of research and price comparing, and we've been putting money away since August.  Now is as good a time as any to start booking hotels, flights, etc and I just can't seem to pull the trigger.  I think it's the thought of spending the money - one lump sum of $500+ makes my heart beat a little faster.

We haven't gone on a big vacation together, that didn't involve family and writing mom and dad a check or something of the sort.

Is this a normal feeling?  Has anyone else felt this way when planning a vacation?

Re: Planning a vacation

  • Before we bought a house, I used to think nothing of dropping money on vacations but now it does freak me out. A lot of times I'll spend hours researching trips and then wimp out. Not only that but I worry about leaving both dogs with my mom while we're away. When it was just Gracie it wasn't a big deal.
  • Large sums of money, vacation or not, always make me hate to pull the trigger!

As for flights I would probably hold off a little. I just booked for Easter weekend (Th to Tu) to Seattle and it was $331.

I know your original post wasn't about your itinerary but do you know what your plans are when you're out there?

  • We haven't gotten to the 'what to do' stages yet.  Other than a few typical touristy things - the space needle, alcatraz, etc.  Do you have any suggestions, ideas, recommendations?  I'm all ears!  Especially places to stay.  I've gotten a few, but they aren't cheap.

I did find round trip flights for ~$325 per person - fly to Seattle and fly home from San Fran.  But again, it's tough for me to actually book it.  I'm such a baby.

  • Let me ask my brother for some recs on cheaper places to stay in Seattle if there is such a thing; I've always had a place to crash. The last time I was out there I did the space needle and it was such a clear day that you could see Mt. Rainier...a rare thing I'm told!  I also did the Seattle Underground tour which is all about the illegal activities that took place below the street level back during prohibition.  They do 2 types of these...an all ages and a happy hour/adult tour.  I wished that I did the happy hour tour because I imagine some of the bootlegging/brothel stories would have been much better to hear while enjoying a pint or two but still, a really cool tour to do.  Maybe check out an M's game if you guys like baseball or do a stadium tour.  I did a tour of the Link (where the Seahawk's play) and it was cool but I really like sports so I find that stuff interesting.

Will you guys have a car?  Alki beach is a really cute little area near West Seattle (about 25/30 minutes from downtown) and the seal pups just hang out and chill.  It was cool to see that...totally not used to it on this side of the coast!  There's also a brewery we went to but I am forgetting where.

When I go out in a few weeks I don't think it'll be as touristy of a visit.  More so flying out to check out my brother's new house and hang with FSIL to do a few little wedding prep things for their July wedding.  But I'll report back and also see what I can find out about hotels.

Have never been to Portland but have a friend that lives there.  It's about 3 hours away from Seattle and I've heard it's really chill; that's about all I know!  When we go out in July for my brother's wedding, we're thinking about driving down there though for a night or two.

    Have never been to SF.
