FI and I are looking to buy our first house together within the next year or so. I have been looking into "fixer-uppers" because of the huge savings. I'm really interested in Ikea kitchens. They seem affordable and easy, and I love all the options for storage. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Ikea kitchens? Was it easy to install/could you DIY? Were the employees at the store helpful, or was it kind of like a "you figure it out" kind of thing?
Also, does anyone know if the cabinets are meant to only fit with Ikea appliances? I find their appliances to be a bit pricey, so I'd like to buy those somewhere else, unless it's all meant to fit together.
Thanks

Re: Ikea Kitchens
We only did a small section of our kitchen with Ikea cabinets, but have been very pleased with them.
I brought in a picture of the setup we were looking to add cabinets and countertops to, along with measurements of the space. The lady who helped us was very nice and even recommend a few things since we were looking to build cabinets around our stove and mount a microwave. I had a few ideas of what I thought I wanted, then she gave us a couple of ideas as to what would be more functional.
As far as install, we are complete DIYer's and installed them ourselves. It was pretty easy, and the lady showed us the brackets and how they went together to hang on the walls.
Our cabinets are built around our existing stove and microwave that are not from Ikea. So they should be able to fit regular size appliances. Just be sure to bring the measurements of your appliances so you can make sure the standard size stove and dishwasher will fit. Your fridge will fluctuate.

Just wanted to throw my experience in. This will have to be quick.
We have a 65 year old little house. We loved the shape, charm and oddness of the kitchen. I stripped the cabinets and repainted them all., BUT it was 1.5 years later that i got new counters and sink. I went to Ikea. I purchased the Butcher block and the large farm sink. I am in love with it. Easy to install. It has been a little over a month and i love it. I would highly recomend considering Ikea.
