Anyone Have a Beautiful Shelter Dog? :)

Hey Everyone!!

I was just curious how many of you have adopted from a shelter, tell me a little bit about them!

I used to volunteer at our local animal shelter with my husband, we came across our little JRT, Dexter :) All we knew about him was that he was a stray, and came in with over 50+ porcupine quills in his face. They guessed he was around 6 years old. He is now almost 10 years old and is just starting now to get little grey hairs on his snout. He has been the love of our lives. He still has so many issues with meeting new people, and hearing loud noises. We are trying really hard to socialize him with new people and he is slowly, slowlyyyy getting better. Not your typical Jack Russel - he has his moments where he gets crazy excited and then he is done. He relaxes most of the time and is a very very sweet and quiet boy. Now I work at the animal shelter in our area and have worked there almost a year. It is the best job I have had by FAR!

(Wanted to post a picture but I only have pictures of him on fb that I can link too and it's not working :( )

  • I don't have one at home, but I have volunteered at a shelter for years so my heart is full of beautiful shelter dogs :o)  Congrats on yours!

  • I don't have a shelter dog right now (apartment is small and the complex has weird/crazy breed restrictions) but I have had such a wonderful experience in the past with our family dog Dakota.  He was a yellow lab/golden retriever mixed with who knows what, and he was the sweetest dog I have ever met.  We got him when he was around 8-10 weeks old, and he passed away almost two years ago at the age of 17 - not a day goes by that I don't think about him.

He was such an unbelievable joy in my life, and even though I miss him, I am so happy that we were able to have so much time with him and make so many memories.

I can't wait to rescue another pup someday!

Your Dexter sounds like he had a rough go for a while, but I am so glad that he found a place with people that care enough to work with him and love him!

  • I decided to get a dog nearly 9 years ago; this was right after my H and I split up.

I toyed with the idea of a dog over the years and I figured i'd go for it.

The first place I went was my town shelter. There was a German shepard there but when I found out he was an escape artist, I decided no.

I tried the county shelter.  *I looked at 4 dogs: a little mixed breed, a beagle, an older dog (forgot what kind) and a 4 month old puppy.

She was a mix of an akita and a sharpei and I decided no because I didn't want what could possibly be a large dog.

I ws with a friend -- she said to me, "hey, what about this guy here? his name is Elvis..."

And that was the doggus I took.

He is a JRT/foxhound/collie mix --- he weighed 45 pounds when I got him -- I think he was just about out of his puppyhood -- and then he grew a bit taller and filled out. He topped out at about 70 pounds and that's where he is now.

He is now nearly 11 years old.

I kept the name because I liked the name, plus I like Elvis Presley.:)
  • We adpoted our pup Boomer (pic below) from a rescue. He is amazing and the perfect dog for us. We had been looking for a puppy for a few months and one day we went to the rescue and Boomer was the only puppy to come up to us. I joke that he was choosing us! He was so sweet we had to take him home and he's been the most amazing addition to our lives.

We're hoping to rescue another dog but are waiting to buy a house with a yard. While Boomer does really well in our apartment and going for walks/playing in the house, I worry it will be too much with two dogs.

  • That is great that you are working at the shelter OP!

We adopted Max from a shelter when he was a pup, and it was such a great decision. He is a little neurotic and ball obsessed, but is a very sweet boy and a great protector. He is turning four this year!

  • I have one!  My fiancee and I both grew up with dogs and after living 2 years without one, we knew we couldn't do it any longer.  We stumbled across a 'beagle mix' at the local animal shelter (AWSOM in Monroe County, PA it's an amazing place if you are in the area) and instantly fell head over heals for him.

He was a stray with a collar but no tags, he was very thin.  After taking him in the car a couple times we learned the real story, he gets very anxious in the car, especially when it slows down or stops, he will squeeze his way onto your lap to make sure your not going any where, he always does this without fail.  We think someone took him to a secluded area opened the door and let him go.

All he wants to do is please his people, he is the best dog we could have asked for.

His name is Bongo (my fiancee is a percussionist) and we are still not sure what his true breed really is, we just know it's a great combination! :)

    Poor little guy.:(

Looks like he has a lot o German Shorthair Pointer in him, too.

Give him a treat every time  he gets in the car.:)  He'll associate it with a good experience and a reward.:)

  • Shelter dogs rock! We adopted our "furry son" from Homeward Bound Rescue and he is the best little dog! He is a Jack Russel mix and such a sweet boy. He got so sick when we left him to go on a trip (he stayed at a doggie daycare), because he missed us so much! It took him a good year to realize we were not going to leave him. He must've been kicked by the previous owner and he does get skittish around feet. Loves to cuddle and loves us so much-we feel mutual :) He also is very protective around our baby too! Couldn't ask for a better dog!
