Consignment sales-which is better?

Has anyone ever been to the Fox Chapel Kids Consignment Sale (it's on this week)?  If so, how is it-are the prices good/along with the selection?  They have some odd hours and you have to pay $5 if you want to shop early.  How does it compare to Sunflower Sprouts?  Thanks for any input.  If there are any other ones, please let me know.  I hate how late Sunflower Sprouts is this year.

Re: Consignment sales-which is better?

  • I don't have experience with either of those, but I did Snugglebugs in the fall and it was enormous.  The prices were quite low, I thought.

This spring I'm doing Just Between Friends, but I've never been to their sale.

  • I haven't done those sales but I've been to Snugglebugs and Just Between Friends. Personally I liked JBF a lot more, but I've heard good things about both.
  • Snugglebugs is next week and one of my friends swears by it.  She sells and buys there.
  • I'm a huge fan of JBF, I've never attended Snugglebugs.
  • I've been to all of them and I consign at two of them. Here are my thoughts - everyone has different thoughts I'm sure - and they could change year to year. :-) Expect long lines at all of them except Fox Chapel and Hiland or Bellwood due to size and be patient. An hour is not unheard of - the best way is to pay to shop early or don't go the first day (or volunteer). The cashiers are all volunteers, they don't get paid.

Fox Chapel Consignment Sale: I am going early - $5 is worth it as I can't go Friday. I got a few things there in the fall. Excellent quality, everything was very well inspected and good prices. I expected more high end options (and I got a few) like Hanna Andersson, etc. and found more Circo than I expected, but worth going to the sale - very friendly people there. Prices were very, very good. In the fall, I saw much more stuff for boys than I saw in the 12 month to 3T girls range, but, of course that could change each sale. And, that is a good thing for some people.

Snugglebugs (South Hills): Been there twice. First time I got some good deals, second time, nearly everything I bought had a stain (over $100 worth of stuff). They do not do a good job with inspecting (or as good as other sales) - again just my opinion. Prices were fair. I did not think the correspondence with the coordinator was professional. She told me that stuff happens at these sales and I should be prepared for it (having been to more than 15 sales in less than a year and being a consignor, I had to disagreed). I won't go back. NOTE: THERE IS NO BATHROOM AVAILABLE - a problem if you are pregnant, you have to go to another store in the plaza. Good selection in boys 7 and up - better than other sales. Closely examine your purchases for stains, but then again, do that for all sales.

Sunflower Sprouts (North Hills): Consigning this year for the first time as they are expanding to a much larger location in the same mall. I have shopped the sale 3 times. I agree it was a little harder to shop as it was so squished together. That should be remedied this time and I am very much looking forward to it. I do pay the $10 and shop early (this time I volunteered, so I don't have to pay). The lines are shorter and you get a few more items. I'd give it a B in terms of inspection. I saw a few things that shouldn't have been there (especially shoes), but I do expect some things to get through (just not as much as Snugglebugs). Maternity clothes and junior clothes (only specific brands of junior clothes) will be there (just can't remember junior sizes). I don't think they have a bathroom, but I'm not sure. Good mix of boys and girls and my friends with boys found a lot more here than other sales. Pretty good selection in the girls 5 and up section - probably more than other sales.

JBF: Been a consignor, shopper, and volunteer here for many years. Definitely pay to shop the pre-sale. It is only one weekend and gets very busy. They inspect very strictly, probably the best of the big sales (sunflower and snugglebugs). It's the biggest sale. I walked out with many amazing prices on high end stuff (Hanna, Janie and Jack, Gap, Mini Boden, uggs). Most prices are fair (remember than some of these dresses retail $50 or more), but some of the stuff that shouldn't be expensive (e.g., Old Navy, Kohl's, Faded Glory, Carter's) is priced too high... but that's the consignors and not the sale. Just know your prices and you'll do great. LOTS of baby equipment and it goes fast and cheap! Biggest selection of toys I have seen anywhere. I have spent over $300 easily at this sale, but tend to be closer to $100 at the other sales. Bigger selection for girls in my size range (it was 18 months to 3T). Not a lot in the big boys sections and girls 5 and up goes fast, but was good stuff. With this sale, I have assisted with tear down and was amazed at what had not sold, even at 50% off. The 50% sale is well worth going to, still great stuff left. In terms of consigning, there was a shift in ownership and things are still in flux, but my checks are pretty big and I sell more than 80% of what I take (I do price it to sell :-)). They have maternity clothes and some juniors as well.

I hope this helps... not trying to insult anyone who may have had better experiences/different experiences, just my perspective to help other moms get the best deals. :-) Happy shopping!

Hiland and Bellwood are both good, but small. Very well inspected. Get there early as it is gone fast.

  • Thank you so much-all of this info is extremely helpful :)  I really appreciate it.
