I am finishing a fifth year program in December if he has specific questions.
Re: dh&ls06
Thanks so much hun!?
So the 5th year option lasts for one year and you graduate with a masters, right??Do you have to do a thesis or is it work experience? Is it mainly one semester of classes then all work experience during the 2nd semester? We're interested in how prepared he would feel once that year were over.?
We're not sure if this will be the option he pursues. He started a similar type of program in Australia and couldn't keep up. He's extremely dyslexic and struggles with writing papers and lots of homework. He did so well in his placements though. It's a tough situation. School has always been hard for him. BUT, there aren't any graphic design jobs here either. He's applied to practically all of them and hasn't heard anything back.
We're kind of at a stalemate. ?
So the 5th year option lasts for one year and you graduate with a masters, right? This depends on what your degree is in and what you are trying to get the certification in. I can't remember if you stay in Bham but the program at UAB is actually a Master's Program and took me exactly 3 years! January 06-December 08. I will say that my BS is in psychology thought so I had two semesters of nothing but prereqs.
Do you have to do a thesis or is it work experience? There is no thesis for the special education masters(not sure about the other programs) but we did have to put together an on-line portfolio(which would be a breeze for someone with his background)
Is it mainly one semester of classes then all work experience during the 2nd semester? How long the program takes and what you take when will depend on what classes he's already taken going into the program. There are some schools that will just allow him to take about 4 classes and earn the certificate at the BA level but I'm not sure where.
We're interested in how prepared he would feel once that year were over. If he decides to go into one of the critical needs areas (math, science, esl, special education) he can probably find a job now contingent upon him finishing school. That's what I did. I am in my fourth year of teaching and will just school next month. Needless to say...after four years I feel pretty prepared to teach my class.

I hope you don't mind if I butt in here-but is your DH interested in Elem Ed or something else?
I can tell you how mine is stuctured if it would help.
Oh ok, so he could (potentially) take around 4 classes and be certified that way? I will have to google to see if there are any programs near by.
Thanks so much for all the info! I appreciate it!
Butt in all you want! He thinks middle school aged kids. That's when DH had lots of problems in school..his LD was diagnosed really late and he said those grades were a big struggle for him, so he's kind of drawn to them.?
We don't know what he's going to do. There just aren't any jobs in his field.
So it's going to take you 2 years total? I think if DH decided to do a 5th year program it would take him 2 years at least..he doesn't have the math and a couple other subjects.?
Oooh ok. I'll have to check out UAB's site. Thanks!?
Ah, okay-well, my certificate will be Elementary Ed, K-6. A lot of schools in this area have 5th grade in elementary school and 6th is a possibility too (though I am not sure which ones have that in elem. schools too).
So if he wants to teach 7th or above, he'll be looking at a Secondary Ed. certificate in a content area I think (say, 5th year program in English, or Biology or Math-and yeah, we do have those
I started school in Jan. this year. It'll take me from January 08-Dec. 09.
I took pre requisites that spring 2008, and then over the summer I took the first 'block' of classes called 'pre block'. This fall, I took 'literacy block' (about Literacy, writing, etc.). Next semester is Content Block, where we learn to teach SS, Science and Math. I'm taking a classroom management class in May, and then in Fall 2009, I'll be an intern.
Secondary Ed. is set up differently though, because they don't teach all subjects to their classes. But generally, all Ed. majors turn in a online portfoilio and we all have increasing lab experiences each semester as we go on, leading up to a semester as a student teacher.
no problem!
let me know if I can help with anything because I'd be happy to.
