Ugh, I thought the "3 behavior" would be stopping...

Maybe this is the grand finale?  We are a month away from the 4th birthday.  I was really wishing this behavior would come to an end.  Her new thing is to start the day with a mega tantrum.  It's been every day this week.  Today it was because I asked her to put pants on.  She said "NO!"  and then when I told her she needed to put pants on, she basically exploded.  I told her to go to her room and come out when she was done screaming because that was not how I wanted to start the day.  She was in there for 15 minutes acting like a nut.  It just sucks having to deal with that first thing in the morning.

  • I'm right there with you! We have about 6 weeks to go and I am so OVER it. Todd seems to say "I can't" about just everything from putting on his socks to carrying his cup to just standing up. So ridiculous. And he cries over "something" every morning and every evening.

Heather's behavior has improved since she turned 6, so I'm really hoping that Todd will follow suit on his birthday.

  • Ugh...I feel for you. That was my morning for at least 6 months when dd was 3. At least you could keep her in her room. Dd wouldn't stay in her room. She had a toddler handle thing on and would bust it off. I'd try locking and she would unlock. I'd have to hold the door closed while she banged at it. Once dd was a little better and actually would go to her room when I told her I considered that at least somewhat of a success! I agree it is a terrible way to start the morning.

Really things did improve over time and right at 4 I could notice a difference.

If you continue to have morning issues we had real succes using a reward chart.

  • We are right there, too. It started 2 months before his 4th birthday. The rest of 3 was wonderful. I am hoping that this is not a bad sign for age 4. I feel like I do nothing but manage his behavior all day. It is exhausting.

We had been doing a reward chart for the past year but it was not specific to any certain behaviors. (It was the coin chart I posted a while back)  It worked very well for a long time but now that there are very specific issues we might have to revamp the chart.

Our chart was general but was specific to just getting ready in the morning. Not sure if your general one is in regards to morning or overall behavior. I found focusing just on getting ready was good since it was our biggest issue. If she was good getting ready she got a sticker for the day on her chart and got one for herself (also helped that she picked out the stickers we bought for this). After so many stickers she picked from a prize basket.

Another idea that worked off and on...racing each other. See who can get dressed first. Or using a timer. I bought a cute little ladybug one and gave her a certain amount of time to get dressed to see if she could beat the clock. Sometimes these were great sometimes didn't work. They definitely work best if I implement before she starts getting upset about something.
