Possibly Moving to NC

Hello,

My DH and I currently live in Nebraska, but have been thinking a lot about moving to NC. I just had a couple questions though for you girls that live there. What are the taxes like there? I know from looking on Realtor.com, that the property taxes are significantly less than what we pay here, but I was talking to my mom tonight and she said a friend of hers that lived there says you guys get taxed on everything: federal, state, cars and homes of course, but like county tax and city tax as well and something about being taxed on the value of the stuff inside your home? Is this right? Taxes are the only thing I think holding us back and I've tried google, but I can't seem to find anything that will tell me what taxes you pay or what you get taxed on. Help?

Re: Possibly Moving to NC

  • Okay this is really sad because I can't tell you exactly what our taxes are because I don't remember (everything's rolled into our mortgage payment), BUT I will tell you that my husband and I are from Nebraska and the taxes here -- at least in our county -- are WAY lower than there. Of course, it totally depends on where you're living, but I do believe NE is one of the highest.

We're military so we don't live in the nicest area of NC, but there are quite a few cities here I would be totally thrilled to live in -- Charlotte, Asheville, pretty much anywhere in the Triangle.... It's a beautiful state! If you've narrowed it down to a city, I'd recommend just taking a trip out here and meeting with a realtor. It won't cost you a dime, and that way you can look around, ask questions, and find out what you can afford. :)
