Reupholstered couches?

Has anyone ever done this? Or maybe a stupid question but it can be done right?

Re: Reupholstered couches?

  • I had mine done in ATL - they are my grandparents Henredon furniture and there is NO way I would be able to afford that type of furniture today.  My grammie used to cover it in plastic in the LR that no one used.  Cracks me up to this day.  So I inherited a lot of their furniture and reupholstered that a couple years ago.  Couldn't be happier w/it.  And the people who did it did an AMAZING job and it was reasonable - but ATL has a lot of competition for this.
  • It can be done.. but just a word of caution: it can get expensive. I had a wingback chair reupholstered earlier this year. The fabric cost me about $100 (which was on clearance) and the reupholstering was about $200, which was the cheapest I could find.

That is for one wingback chair.

  • I guess what you have to do is compare the price of reupholstering to the price of buying new furniture.  I have one couch, a chair and a half, and an ottoman that I want recovered.  Okay so now I know it can be done, I just need to compare prices.  Thanks ladies!
  • I had a chair and a half done a couple of years ago and I think it was $180 and that was for new foam also.  Plus fabric costs.  But it was in a rural town.  I had it done before we bought our house and our house is too small for it so my sister is babysitting it!  When I was calling around in Auburn I think the norm was around $30 a yard, plus fabric cost.

A lot of people go to thrift stores and buy old furniture and have it reupholstered because it is made so much better than today's furniture.  Like Katie said, the stuff she had reupholstered would prob cost around $3500 for just the couch because it is great furniture.  I would personally like to spend less on my sofas because I wouldn't feel bad about replacing them in a few years as my taste changed.  My parents bought new LR furniture a couple of years ago and now wish they had their old stuff recovered because it lasted for about 15 yrs and their new is already showing signs of wear.
