Should granite scratch?

We had granite counter tops installed on Weds. of last week. We weren't really using them until this weekend because the tile installer was there doing our back splash. In fact, we haven't even cooked in the kitchen since they went in, yet we have counted about 13 scratches on them so far. This seems wrong -- I thought granite was popular because it was durable!? I know you can't cut directly on it, but I didn't think setting something like a small cereal bowl onto it would scratch it!

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Re: Should granite scratch?

  • It does seem wrong! There shouldn't be scratches in it from a bowl. Maybe the scratch is just in the seal that they put on- just superficial? I still wouldn't be happy though so I can see why you are asking.
  • I don't know... I tried to scrub them out and they aren't budging. Some appear to be on the surface, but a few you can actually feel that they're raised. And, like you said, either way I feel like it's going to be an issue! Even if it's just the sealer th
  • Interesting, thank you! They're supposed to take a look at in on Weds., so hopefully we will get some answers then.

  • As a Kitchen Designer I can say 100% that granite can and will scratch.  Some granites will scratch easier than others but they can all scratch.  Bottoms of dishes and pots and pans that aren't smooth can easily scratch most granites.

  • I am also a Kitchen Designer and to confirm, yes granite definitely can and does scratch.  The bottoms of ceramic plates and bowls can be culprits because they sometimes have small sharp edges on the bottom where there is no glazing.  I'd ima

  • Thanks for the responses!

Mystery solved... they are scratched b/c they are, in fact, marble :(. For some unknown reason Home Depot was under the impression that they were granite, but they aren't. I'm so annoyed -- I was between this stuf
