Extreme Toddler Tantrums

Anyone's toddler throw extreme tantrums that involved their child banging their head off of things?  99% of the time Nolan is the happiest little guy you'll meet, but man does that kid have a temper! 

Last night I was on my own for bedtime duty.  I nursed Nolan and put him in his crib with books to "read" as I always do, then I went in to read to Brinley.  I heard him throw the books over the side of the crib--his signal that he's ready for the rest of his routine, but wanted to finish Brinley's book.  A few minutes later I heard more banging and checked the monitor--he was banging his head off the side of the crib. 

He's done this a few other times recently (of courses it started after his 15 month well baby visit) when he's been mad or frustrated.

Normal?  Should I be worried that he'll hurt himself?

Normal. I'm pretty sure there was an Ask Moxie post about toddlers hurting themselves during tantrums. Do your best to prevent him from hurting himself, but it's totally normal and very unsettling.

Garrett does this too, where he will bang his head off the floor during a tantrum.  Once he banged it a little too hard and hurt himself, so he doesn't do it as forceful as he used to.  Ditto Amy, it's normal, just do what you can to keep him fr

my son used to do this too.  he's now 3. he hasn't done that in a long time. instead he uses his words (not good words though...) when he is mad and tantruming.
