We're going to OBX mid July and I'm starting to get my planning together about what to bring, when to leave, etc.

I've stayed in a rental house before so I'm well aware of all that's involved. I guess my main question is what is traffic going to be like getting in on Saturday in Mid July? I've only been to OBX once as an adult, but it was 7 years ago and we went down Labor day weekend so there was no traffic. We'll be staying in Hatteras and can't get into our house until 4pm.

We were thinking about leaving super early so DD would sleep most of the way and then just hanging out until we could check in. But I found out that my college is having an alumni night at Camden yards and the O's are playing the Blue Jays and DH's cousin pitches for the Blue Jays. So he wants to go.

Would it be easier to wait until like 10 or 11 and leave or will we hit major traffic? Oh and we'll probably take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel not 95.

Leave early - Hatteras is a looooong way down. I would either leave at the crack o'dawn - like 4 am or earlier or very late in the day - like 5 pm and then get there at midnight. When we go to SC in the summer, we've driven about 3/4ths of the way t

Ok so you all have confirmed it for me. I figured it would be worth it to leave early, but if we had that extra time to pack I was going to use it.

I'd rather not be stuck in traffic with DD!

Our first year we left around 9am and once we got into OBX, traffic was awful. The next year we left at 4am and it was a breeze! DD did not sleep in the car like we'd hoped, but that's another story...

Thanks for posting this! We are vacationing this summer in OBX as well. Does anyone know if it's less traffic if your turn day is Sunday instead of Saturday?
