When can I fix my orange hair?

About 3 weeks ago, I tried a new stylist to highlight my medium blonde hair.  I usually go pretty light, with a lowlight or two. She totally effed it up, making the roots orange and the rest a brassy mess!  I didn't really get the full effect of it all until I got home and in better light.  I immediately texted her, and she said to try blue shampoo and to come back the next week if it was still bad.

Well, it was still bad so I returned the following Sunday.  She put toner on my hair and it turned grey!  So then my hair was a grey, brassy, orange mess.  She said it would wash out.  It did, but the orange/brassy remains.  I had to leave for Mexico the next day, so I couldn't fix it more.  I'm back now, so what do I do?  I should also say my hair feels dry and yucky from 2 weeks in a row of chemicals.  Do I need to wait longer to get it fixed?

Re: When can I fix my orange hair?

  • Stop going to the person who messed it up in the first place.  Head to another salon, pay for a fix, and cut your losses.

Yeah, I agree with this. And if it's really bad, I would also ask for my money back.

  • You should find someone who specializes in corrective color. Not every colorist is good with that, and I would certainly not go back to the same stylist again.
  • Yeah, totally not going back to her.  This was the first time she did my hair, on a friend's recommendation.  I went back to her to fix it because I didn't have time to find another stylist.  I was more wondering when I could safely get it redone/fixed without harming it more.  I usually wait around 6 weeks between highlights.

Again, if you find someone who specializes in corrective color, they'll be able to advise you on the best plan to fix your hair safely.

  • I agree with jessicah.  On a side note, I safely have my hair colored every three weeks.  So, you should be fine.  A good colorist will also use a strengthening conditioner during the color application to help get it back into shape.  Good luck!
  • I am a hair stylist. You can fix it now. It doesn't even sound like you really need a color correction, just to have left the color on longer. I am not seeing your hair of course so that might not be the case.
