How many treats per week is too many?

Sometimes we give our dog Abby a pig ear every night.  She is 75 lbs (she is at an appropriate weight, not overweight, not to thin) and gets adequate exercise daily.  Is a pigear/ small bully stick every day too much?  To be honest it normally it isn't every day but is still 4 days a week on average.  Is that bad?  During lunch when I got home to let her out of her crate for a midday break I sometimes put a little PB in her kong... I guess if she isnt overweight its not a big deal, or is it?

Re: How many treats per week is too many?

  • As long as she is not getting too many calories/day and doesn't start putting on more weight, you should be just fine. Just keep an eye on her physique, and run your hands over her every now and then to make sure she isn't putting on any extra padding. :)

  • TY, thats what I figured.  She has a defined waist and is super muscular.  Gets about an hour exercise a day.  Vet approves of her weight so I agree with you, watch it and scale back if needed.  Just wanted a little feedback on what I
  • I wouldn't give mine a pig's ear or bully stick every day, to me those are special treats. But they do get frozen kongs every day, sometimes two, with a half a banana and sometimes a little PB in them.

  • Some dogs can get upset bellies from eating those kinds of treats too much or too often, but if it doesn't seem to be causing any digestive problems or making her overweight, then you're probably fine.

FWIW, I don't think it's bad to give more tr

  • Too many treats is like pp said, when dog is gaining weight. We give stuffed kings and milk bones.
  • The dog trainer we go to said we should be using "at least 50 treats a day" while training our pup. A "treat" is a finger nail sized piece of chicken that's just poached in water in the crock pot. He also gets a kong with pb once a day.

All depends on your dog.  I personally do not give my dogs pig ears, my dog has had pancreatitis from raw hide and anything like that and gets diarrhea from them, plus I have heard stories of dogs choking on them so I avoid a
