Where do I start?

My fianc? and I are getting married in January, but I'm spending the summer close to him (we've been long distance for a bit now so that I can finish my degree). Even though I'm not actually moving in until after the wedding, we're planning to start the "making our nest" decorating process on his apartment over the summer so that we're not totally overwhelmed when we're newlyweds, while I'm trying to move in all my things and he's starting another semester of his grad program. I like the idea of decorating. A lot. But I know I won't like the reality of it--another reason why breaking it into stages is nice.

Only problem is--I'm totally hopeless with these things! Help? I've worked out a color scheme (either emerald green or some shade of blue as the primary color, yellow as the secondary color, and grey/black as the neutrals), and I've picked the dishes I want us to register for (black and white, with a tiny bit of yellow and an Asian fusion vibe) but besides that I have no earthly idea of how to start. I don't even know what questions to ask! I don't have a massive budget for this, and I'm wiling to try some limited DIY projects, but I was always the gradeschooler who couldn't figure out how to glue popsicle sticks together... Basic decorating ideas anyone?
