Pet Insurance

Who does everybody use for pet insurance? Has anyone had any good or bad experiences? I'm going through Petfinder but there's so many to compare. I also want to make sure my vet accepts it, and I don't want to be forced to go to Banfield. I'd love to hear everyone's input.

Re: Pet Insurance

  • I use PetFirst. So far so good! Bowser has had one incident and they paid the full $500 they said they would.
  • Just pay very close attention.  The new thing is for in the insurance companies to not cover preventable diseases.  While any good owner could prevent them most of the time I would be hesitant about a company that has so many restrictions.

What does pet insurance entail? I think that it would be a great idea to sign my cat, Hudson, up for it!

PetFirst has multiple different plans at different prices. I'll be honest: I don't know what our plan covers.

Bowser ate a hairbrush a month ago. We didn't know if he had a blockage so we took him to the Vet ER. He was just gassy (ugh) but the visit cost us $800. Our insurance covered $500. The ER didn't think our insurance would cover it because they diagnosed him with gastritis and apparently a handful of pet insurance companies don't pay unless something is actually wrong (not just for gas or constipation). We were pleasantly surprised when we got our check in the mail.

Our plan is $15/month and we get a total amount of $1,000 per year and a limit of $500 per incident.

  • We have a "for emergencies" plan with Pet Plan. We opted out of "routine care" coverage (wellness visits, vaccinations).

But we wanted coverage for those times when our pittie can't tell the difference between "food" and "not food," and needs X-rays (or more expensive treatment).

  • We use Trupanion. We haven't had to use it for anything major yet, so it is hard to say how we will like it, but we are happy so far :)

  • I was just researching this the other day!  My hubby and I decided to go with Healthy Paws because that's the one that works best for our pets and us.  They cover all 50 states (we're both military, so that's important for us) and have good prices with a lot of potential discounts (multi-pet discounts, spay/neuter etc).  They also cover a lot, including things like hip dysplasia which aren't covered by a lot of other companies and you can go with any vet you want. They had awesome reviews, too. Another nice thing they do is donate $25 to a shelter for every free quote or referral they get.

You're going to want to go with a company that works best for your pets and you though.  A website I found rather helpful when I was starting to look was http://www.petinsurancereview.com/ .  You can compare a bunch of different companies, see reviews from people who use them, and read some tips/general info on getting pet insurance.
