House Warming Party

What are your ideas for having a successful house warming? Who to invite? Theme or no theme? Appetizers or meal? Music? I need some ideas! We will be having our party mid-July.

Re: House Warming Party

  • I like heavy apps for this type of thing. You don't want to have to tend to food the whole time, and I don't ever feel it's necessary to offer a sit down meal that could be cumbersome or messy. When I say heavy apps though, I like the idea that they could become a meal if needed, i.e. fancy pigs in blankets, dips and veggies, small sandwiches and/or meatballs in a sauce, snack mix, nuts, cheese plate, cookies, brownies, etc.

I wouldn't worry about a theme persay, but would urge you to make sure the items all go together. I dislike when things seem random like a meal of fried chicken, slaw, and biscuits, and then all of a sudden there are chips and salsa out too, KWIM?

Don't forget drinks either. I had out sodas and juice boxes for all, and beer, wine, and a signature cocktail out for kids. Everything was easy so guests could feel free to serve themselves.

Depending on how many people you're inviting, I would suggest going "open house" style. We had ours from 3 to 8, which was perfect, as we had, at least, 50 people walk through during the party, but it never got too crowded at any given time.

  • For our housewarming, it was just family, because our house wasn't large enough to accomodate family + friends.

It was still practically summer, so in addition to appetizers, we did burgers & hotdogs on the grill and set up a toppings station.  While we didn't have an actual theme, all of the food went well together. I don't like a menu that is all over the place, ie stick with BBQ, Italian, or Mexican.

We had music playing outback on the deck, but not inside.  I have a summer play list I downloaded from iTunes.  It's got everything the Beachboys, to Weezer, to Will Smith's Summer Time.  It's not offensive, and most people should be familiar with the tunes.

  • I like simple and elegant. Try going monochromatic. It's easier and it looks really pretty. Fresh flowers around different spots, candles and linens are very easy to color coordinate. Good luck! Hope you have a wonderful party!
