NPCER: giving up cable tv or landline phone

Many people give up cable tv or their landline phone to cut costs.  Have you?  Are you thinking about it?  Why have you done it, or why would you never do it?

I'm in one of my "cleaning frenzy/financial realignment" moods.  These tend to come on when the school year's almost over.  I wouldn't mind eliminating the landline completely and just keeping our cell phones.  I feel like we're paying too much money for our cellphones and landline combined, esp. considering we hardly ever use the phone.

On the other hand, I'm not giving up cable.  I like too many shows on diverse networks.  I dislike streaming and watching on any device other than our tv set.  I will watch very short excerpts on our tablet, but that's it.

  • We gave up our landline three or four years ago because all we got were calls all day long from solicitors and bill collectors. It was annoying. I'm considering getting another one to give me some more peace of mind should my kids need a phone and not

  • We gave up cable a year ago and don't miss it.  We bought an HD antenna to put on our roof and get about 20 channels over the airwaves for free.  You just have to buy the antenna first.  We also have a couple websites we go to where we can

  • We never had a land line in the apartments we had when we were first married and when we bought our first house, we never got one. Still don't have one...7 years later

The only draw back I forsee with not having one is that the 911 operator canno

  • We don't have either one. DH and I always use our cell phones. A few years ago we got a landline and only kept the phone plugged in for a few days. All were got were sales calls and collection agency calls for the people who used to have our number. </

  • We never had a land line.

Our cable TV is a basic package that is essentially free with our cable internet. We run a HDMI cord from our tv to our laptop to watch streaming content on the TV.

  • We don't have either. We use cell phones and internet. We do have Netflix.
