Question for Christians who own guns for self-protection

First off - I'm not bashing your choice to own a gun for protection.  I just have some questions about it.  I hear a lot of Christians cite scripture but I rarely hear them cite scripture to justify their position on guns.  Aside from the obvious (that no guns existed at the time of Christ), why do you think that is?  Is it possible it's because the New Testament tells us of a God of peace, mercy and forgiveness?  I know the Old Testament makes references to an eye for an eye, but when you read the New Testament, doesn't that seem barbaric?  Wasn't JC a man of peace?  WWJD today if he had the choice to have a gun for protection - I'm not sure he would.  Remember when JC was praying in the garden before he was apprehended and when the soldiers came, he wasn't violent at all.  When Peter attacked one of the soldier's and cut his ear off, JC actually rebuked him and told him "No, Peter!"

On a sort-of unrelated sidenote, for the film buffs out there, De Sica's "The Bicycle Thief" is a great film with the message that the only way to stop the cycle of violence is mercy.

If I'm way off base here, feel free to tell me to go fly a kite.  I'm just curious if anyone had any thoughts on this.

Re: Question for Christians who own guns for self-protection

  • Are you in my head? I've had many of the same questions, namely because most of the staunch pro-gun support I've seen personally has some from those who consider themselves to be conservative Christians. I've struggled enough recently with the religion an

  • I am christian but we don't belong to a church right now and I don't know any scriptures by heart so I don't know if this applies to me.  We own guns more for DH because he likes to go to the gun range and shoot.  I started myself last month and

  • I just wanted to address your mention of Peter having a sword in the garden. I think it is interesting that Peter did have the sword. Apparently Jesus had no problem with his disciples being armed. In this day those swords would probably be guns. Jesus
  • I may be recalling it incorrectly but I think the sword he used was the soldier's, not his.  In any event, isn't the general theme of the new testament one of peace and mercy? Didn't Jesus tell the apostles before he ascended to heaven to "go like la

  • No it was not the soldier's sword. In Matthew, Mark and Luke it does not actually name the disciple, what does use the word "his" as an adjective to sword. In John it names Peter and says he had a sword with him. So Jesus must not have minded his dis
  • Do you think Jesus himself would have been armed?

  • I don't know. My guess would be probably not. But he seems to have been okay with having those around him armed. I think the whole question is situational. David was said to be a man after God's own heart. When King Saul was after him, David had ample
  • But aren't we supposed to model our lives and actions after Christ (not others in biblical times)? Do you think JC preached about vengeance after his death on the cross?

  • Vengeance? I don't see protecting children as vengeance. And Jesus was not always meek. He certainly wasn't as He overturned the money changers' tables in the temple.
  • You're missing the point.  It's the going after people and killing them that's vengeance. JC would not have done that.  Yes he overturned tables and was upset.  Did he ever kill or promote/preach it? No. He preached about forgiveness, mercy

  • I also find it interesting that your money changer's example is really the only time that i recall where Jesus became physically angry.  He must have been very upset with those changing money and buying/selling goods in his holy temple.

Also, the position on guns doesn't have to be justified.  It's clearly stated in our constitution, unlike some made-up rights that have been bandied about in the last 40 years.
