First off - I'm not bashing your choice to own a gun for protection. I just have some questions about it. I hear a lot of Christians cite scripture but I rarely hear them cite scripture to justify their position on guns. Aside from the obvious (that no guns existed at the time of Christ), why do you think that is? Is it possible it's because the New Testament tells us of a God of peace, mercy and forgiveness? I know the Old Testament makes references to an eye for an eye, but when you read the New Testament, doesn't that seem barbaric? Wasn't JC a man of peace? WWJD today if he had the choice to have a gun for protection - I'm not sure he would. Remember when JC was praying in the garden before he was apprehended and when the soldiers came, he wasn't violent at all. When Peter attacked one of the soldier's and cut his ear off, JC actually rebuked him and told him "No, Peter!"
On a sort-of unrelated sidenote, for the film buffs out there, De Sica's "The Bicycle Thief" is a great film with the message that the only way to stop the cycle of violence is mercy.
If I'm way off base here, feel free to tell me to go fly a kite. I'm just curious if anyone had any thoughts on this.
Re: Question for Christians who own guns for self-protection
You have asked a lot of good questions. I hope to be able to answer them...but I have to go make the kiddos dinner and then DH comes home.

Argh. So, I tried to enter edit notes on this, but TN won't permit. And, initially TN wouldn't permit me to include a segment of actual Hebrew text in the middle portion of my reponse where that "Thou Shalt Not Kill." is centered on the page.

I like you, but I found this post mildly irritating and offensive. I am not a gun person; it's not an interest of mine, I don't own one, I've never shot one. My husband has not either, at least not recently. My brother-in-law and fath

Also, the position on guns doesn't have to be justified. It's clearly stated in our constitution, unlike some made-up rights that have been bandied about in the last 40 years.

I think we have to be very careful about taking certain scriptures and applying them to things they were never meant to apply to. Certainly Jesus never had to deal with the issue of guns so it's really a stretch to apply a specific teaching to such a m
