Quickest way to tone upper body?

What is the quickest EASIEST way to tone your arms and chest area? I HATE working out!!! HATE!

Re: Quickest way to tone upper body?

  • Push-ups! You can start out standing, leaning against a wall or counter, then gradually get lower and lower until you're doing regular push-ups on the ground. Find the difficulty level where you can squeeze out 8-10 reps, but no more than that. Have a

  • Play tennis! Swim! Do garden work/lifting/dusting/vaccuming quicker than normal (increase your heart rate)  Dance around the house with ankle weights on your wrists (make sure you do a lot of raising the roof and other 'arm above head' dance moves

  • The best way to do it, is to find something you enjoy doing. It doesn't always have to be "working out".

Chalean Extreme is an awesome program that will get you toned. It does target the whole body and not just the upper body.

  • I agree with PP, take up a sport or something fun that involves upper body.  If you do tennis, remember to work out the other forearm as well so you're not overbalanced.  You could even try Pole classes, if you're interested in that.  It's a super fun workout, and makes you so strong with your upper body.  You'll get sculpted really quickly.  My sis just opened her own studio, and the girls just love it, so much fun!

  • Crutches!

No, in all seriousness, my preferred method is 12-15 reps of the heaviest weight I can handle. This will tone and define, rather than make you have body builder muscles...unless that's what you're going for, in which case I have no clue. ;)

Heavy weights are always best as they'll build muscle faster than zillions of reps with tiny weight, but it's impossible to become body-builder like as a female without hormone supplements, so don't worry. ;) even some women who are considered 'manly' strive really hard for the extra muscle because that's what they like. but it's not easy to do as women don't have enough testosterone to get bulky.
  • Abs and cardio exercise are the well to tone upper body.
Push ups, pull ups, yoga, and swimming are the good choices for this purposes.
  • Hehe...well, I can't say that there's ever an "easy" way to get in shape and tone parts of the body, BUT I can say that there are exercises that aren't overly complicated and easy to do where you may be. :)  For example (like others stated), pushups are great for that.  And one of my fave ways of doing pushups is by adding it onto a burpee/squat thrust.  Also, it's very important to balance out opposing muscle groups so I'd say that whenever you perform something for the front part of your upper body, you should also work out your backside.  You can do this by grabbing dumbbells and performing rear delt flys, because too many pushups alone can cause you to get a hunched posture.  Also, tricep dips are great for toning as are tricep pushup pulses.  For these you don't need to go all the way down, just pulse as you keep your hands a lot closer to each other than if you were to perform a regular pushup. Sorry for the super long response! Hope this helps!!! :D

  • Pole dancing...seriously.
  • The best and easiest  way to tighten up and tone up is to lift weights at the gym.. do every single muscle in the upper body once per week.

  • I, too, do not like weight training.  See if you can find a workout challenge online for your favorite TV shows, maybe ones that are on every other night.  Or, make yourself do push ups for an entire commercial break, then maybe bicep curls for the next one (even with canned veggies/fruits if you don't have weights), tricep kick backs the next.  I find if I give myself short bursts to focus on, I'm more likely to do it.  Also, have a friend/H/W who will do it with you and hold you accountable.
  • The easiest way would be to get into a sport you like so it doesn't feel like a chore.  If you don't like sports either, than the fastest and least complicated way is to do compound exercises like pushups and pull-ups, but because you don't want to just workout one part of your body I would suggest doing some squats as well.  There is actually a super simple workout program called simple fit . org (not sure if links are allowed) and then click on bodyweight exercises.  3 days a week 10-20 minutes is a nice starting point for someone that's not into working out.  Bodyweight exercises will not make you bulky unless you are taking steroids, or eating an obscene amount of calories.

  • Yoga with weights worked for me!
  • I lift weights with my upper body 2x week for 30 minutes and have had outstanding results.  I worked from 3 "rounds" up to 5 in my first couple months.  I do a "pull" exercise (where you're pulling weight like an assisted pull-up, row, or lat bar) for 10-15 reps with completely manageable weight - I don't go for heavy or extreme - focus on good form.  I then do a "push" exercise where I'm pushing weight (dip, push-up, shoulder press, hand weights lying on back pushing upwards) and again do 10-15 reps.  I do another pull exercise, another push exercise, and then some type of core like a 2 minute plank.  That is 1 "round."  Work up to 5 rounds.  It is fast, not overly taxing, and your arms, back, & core will gain definition.
