Opinions on Juicing/Juicers?

First time post on this board so a little about me: I am 25 and my DH is turning 28 next month. We got married about 6 months ago and he has a 4 year old son that we get every other weekend plus holidays/summer, etc. I am a nurse working a full time job 3 nights a week and a part time job in between shifts. DH just got out of the Navy after 8 years of active duty and is preparing to go back to school in the fall.  We are not in terrible shape, but we are also not nearly as healthy as we could be.

We have gym memberships that we utilize regularly, but the bigger issue is our diet. We both know that we can work out til we are blue in the face but if our diet is crap, our results will be limited. We are looking at buying a juicer, or really something more able to handle fruit AND vegetables. We don't have $450+ for a vitamix or blendtec, but I am curious if anyone has tried the Ninja Master Pro which was recently tied for first by consumer reports with the Vitamix. I know it won't last as long, but it is $60 and is a place to start. I want to use it for fruit, but more importantly to add veggies to our diet. Right now we are getting maybe 1-2 servings a day for vegetables, and we both agree that sucking it up and drinking it is going to be more effective for us than trying to fit 4+ more servings a day. Has anyone tried the Ninja Master series? The youtube videos look promising. And do any of you have any good recipes to try?

We are not trying to replace our diet with juicing entirely. To start we just want to add the veggies into our diet, and slowly start to reform from there, working our way to a healthier lifestyle. And yes, I know, the vitamix is amazing and worth the money and all that good stuff, but right now I cannot justify the spending that much on a "super blender."

Re: Opinions on Juicing/Juicers?

  • The reason I even looked in to juicing to begin with is because I have a coworker who started juicing 6 months ago with his wife. He has totally transformed his entire diet and has lost around 50lbs. They are pretty extreme with it- they are to the point that nearly 90% of their diet is raw fruits and vegetables, rather that is juiced or eaten. But, they didn't start there, and he was explaining how much easier juicing made it to just get the servings in- he raves about it every shift.

Right now, we eat on average, 2 meals a day, with 1-2 snacks in between. My schedule sucks, and I know that it is a choice not to make more of an effort to change things around and eat healthier. I do cook vegetables into our meals, and we snack primarily on fruit, but like I said, we still aren't getting much for servings. That being said, we drink all day- be it water or milk or gatorade or coke or tea or whatever, we are both constantly drinking. We have, over the last few months, stopped buying cokes and making tea, so now we are down to water, milk, and gatorade. It doesn't really matter what drink I buy/make, it goes fast at our house. So the juicing thing has been appealing, because I could see us choking down an awful green drink to get to enjoy the fruit juice after, and then, if we don't get a full serving or 7 of fruits/vegetables in our meals, at least we met our servings for the day, anything else would just be extra. I wouldn't stop cooking vegetables, or snacking on fruit, but I also wouldn't stress if I didn't get veggies into every meal because we already met our servings with our morning drink- a full glass of several cups of veggies to drink is a lot easier than a whole plate of veggies to eat, IMO. Like I said, I would like to transform our eating habits, but starting with adding a glass of veggie juice every morning is a much smaller step than changing our whole routine over night.

  • My cousin just did a juicing cleanse and used her ninja. It was more smoothie than juice.  But if you don't mind the consistent, it is actually better because you are not losing any of the nutrients that can be lost when you use a juicer.

I do smoothies daily to help with my fruit/veggie intake and use a magic bullet or blender.  I add 2 cups of spinach to everything because you cannot taste it and it's a cheap/easy way to get in veggie servings!

I would think about doing smoothies with a protein powder and add in things like ground flax seeds and chia seeds for added nutrients.

Awesome, thanks for your feedback! I didn't realize you couldn't taste spinach, which is great because it's one of the most nutrient that you can add to the drinks (besides kale). I think we are going to go with the ninja, we can get over the texture I think, we both love smoothies so we will give it a try :)

You can't taste Kale either, but a normal blender doesn't grind it up all the way.. the ninja should do it though!  Good luck!
