babysitting rates?

Hi, I live in the midwest and am wondering what the going rate would be for a 18 year old babysitter?  We have 4 kids.  She said it doesn't matter to her, whatever we want to pay her and I want to give her a fair amount. Any input is appreciated!  Thanks!

Re: babysitting rates?

  • Here it is $10 an hour for a driving baby sitter, for up to 2 kids. I think friends with 4 kids pay between $15-20. Some less but that is the average in MA. Also, ask what other people pay her or a friend that uses her.

  • Here, its $10 an hour for up to two kids and an additional $5 per hour per kid.

While I don't have kiddos of my own, I had been a babysitter for a long time. Typical going rate, especially for 4 kids, is $20 an hour. I received that much and whenever the mom would return home the kitchen would be spotless and toys would be put away, baths were given before bedtime... I def. worked hard. I wouldn't pay that much to someone if they came over and it was while the kids were sleeping and they did nothing but watch tv.

Does everyone's babysitters take care of other things besides the kids? I would be embarrassed if a parent came home and the kids were sleeping and there was a huge pile of dishes in the sink.

I expect the baby sitter to pick up after themselves, anything they play with DS should be put away and any dishes in the dishwasher. No tv unless they ask, like around Christmas our sitter brough a special movie and asked me first. We were gone a while that day so I thought it would be fun for them.

  • I'm 25 and live in the midwest, and I generally get $10-12/hr for up to 2 kids, but for 4 I would probably see if I could work out $20/hr. For an 18-year-old without much experience, $15 is probably about right.

  • at least 20  i usually charged 20 for two kids overnight and 5 dollars per any kids after that more than 30 is unreasonable for nighttime daytimes is trickier
  • I think it depends on the ages of your kids and the amount of work she does. If all of your child are very young I would say 20 but if one or more of your kids are over 10 ,I would say $15.  You can always pick a set amount like $15 an hour but if you come home and see that she picked something extra up . Then you could give her an extra $10 or $15 for it .

$10.00/hr. for 2 Kids - each addtitional kid 5.00/hr. sounds good.

For my babysitting (yr. 2000), I charged $8.00/hr for 3 kids, driving to their home.  I would watch the kids when the mother left to go to her shift at the hospital, and there was some hours before the dad came home from work.  The children were already home from school by the time I got to work.

    The schedule was: from (300 - 730p)

Free-Play/Play Activity - Usually coloring, playing in the backyard, etc.  I wouldn't take the kids off of the property unless the parents wanted a specific activity (swimming, etc.)

    Snack Time

    Pick up toys

    Homework/Help with Homework

    Dinner (specified by the parents)

    Clean Up Kitchen

    The Dad came home
