Decorating Ideas!

My husband and I are moving from a beautiful, completely furnished modern home into an older Victorian home that is not furnished. We are renting and aren't able to do any updates (the bathrooms and kitchen are very 70s), and we have to buy EVERYTHING from beds to dinner plates. Any advice on how to do this on a budget, and to make it look great, are greatly appreciated!!

Re: Decorating Ideas!

  • If you have one near you, IKEA is a great place to find pretty good quality for not a whole lot of money.  I know that IKEA is more modern, but their glassware is always prices great.  And the Dollar Store/Dollar Tree has inexpensive glassware too.

If you aren't opposed, you could always try Salvation Army and Goodwill Stores, because they always have furniture, especially Victorian/traditional in style. Check out yard sales and other second hand stores, too.

Think outside of the box, too.  There will always be ways to get things cheaper, so before you buy, decide if it would be cheaper to DIY, and always check for coupons!

And remember, if the fabric on a chair isn't exactly what you like, but you like the style, you can always refinish the piece to make it look better.

  • I would keep in mind that there isn't a timeline for "finishing" a house. Go room by room and/or don't be afraid of an empty room while your focusing on others.
  • How long do you think you'll be staying in this house? The timeline would definitely affect how much effort I would put into decorating.
  • OOh, that sounds awesome, an old Victorian home... :  I would really check out some goodwill stores. Check them out, sometime they can have some nice plates and things for the kitchen, and they are pretty cheap and sometimes will have the entire set there.  From which I have noticed..  Also, I don't know if these are near you, but Marshalls, Home Goods, stores like that can help you decorate for really cheap.  I LOVE these stores.  They have it all, bedding, bathroom stuff, kitchen things, decor.

For now, I would get the bare necessities and go from there.  Since beds and couches are needed, start there, then everything else will come together.  Perhaps ask around too, perhaps somebody has some hand me downs they no longer need or have in storage.  We did that for a while until we had enough money to buy all our new bed, couches etc.  They weren't awesome, but did their jobs..  Best of luck and have fun decorating!!!  I have always wanted an old Victorian type home.. :)  a

  • Since you're renting, I would check out WallPops. Their wall stickers are really awesome because you can totally change the look of the room while still being landlord-friendly! I did the same thing with my apartment and am ridiculously pleased with the results.
  • I check wallpops website and its really good. and they are dealing in really cute stuff
