Pond question

My H and I just bought our first home. It has what was probably a nice pond with a waterfall in the backyard. We want to take it out for safety reasons (I had a neighborhood friend drown in a backyard pond when I was little). It also would need a lot of work to get it back into working condition.

We don't know if we should dig the whole surround out and fill it in with dirt, or if we should just leave the surround there and fill it in. What would you do?

Re: Pond question

  • We have a similar pond in our backyard. It's large, but it works and we are keeping it.

If I were in your shoes, I would pull out any usable rocks to keep and place elsewhere. And, I might try to pull up as much of the plastic base liner as possible and trash that.

I would fill in with pea gravel to create a lot of stability and then finish with a few layers of soil. If it is sizeable enough to be a safety/drowning concern, then you will most likely require multiple tons of gravel and dirt. Check with a local landscaping company, as they deliver this stuff right to your home and pour it in for you or dump it on your driveway.

If you don't fill in properly, you will have a big puddle and a lot of sinking ground.

  • Thank you for the responses! I've been really busy so I couldn't check this thread. The pond is at least 2' deep, and about 4' across. It has some thin plastic liner, and some rigid plastic pieces. I think we're going to go ahead and just rip it all out. Thanks for the gravel suggestion!
