DITY moves??

Hey everyone,

My husband has been PCS'd to Seymour Johnson AFB. It is about 500 miles from where we currently live.

We currently have no children and have a 3 bedroom house worth of things to move (only 2 bedrooms actually have beds, the third is a foosball table). I am really organized, so I feel like packing should be easy. We just moved in together in August (I was living out of town because of work), so things aren't very cluttered. Plus, we had the good sense to keep all of my boxes and most of the packing stuff.

Does anyone have any experience with a DITY move? Any tips, thoughts or great/terrible experiences? Thanks so much!

Re: DITY moves??

  • We PCS'd about 500 miles last summer and I'm glad we didn't do a PPM. The rates have gone down so people aren't "making" as much on the move and for me it's not worth the hassle of packing, loading and unloading a truck just to break even. GL in your decision!

  • Thanks for the input! It's tempting, but I'm still nervous about people touching/losing/possibly breaking our stuff.

We are both healthy and capable - I figure let's try for it before we have kids and don't even want to think about moving. My husband has heard from a couple of people that they made enough to get their new appliances and things like that. The houses we are shopping are new construction, and don't typically have a fridge or washer/dryer.

  • We DITY moved 900 miles 5 years ago when DH PCS'd. Since we didn't have an address to ship HHG to yet and were going to be staying at the IL's while we house hunted, we packed up everything we didn't need and couldn't use at IL's and stored it into PODS. We had a 3bed 2bath home, no kids, and we got it all into 2 PODS, plus a small U-Haul trailer we towed behind DH's truck for the drive home. Everything we had set aside as items we would need/want with us fit into our vehicles. There are different sized PODS, I don't remember what size we had but they weren't gigantic. They will help you estimate what you need.

The way the PODS worked, is they dropped one off in our driveway and we filled it up. When we were ready for them to take it away, we called them and they came to get it, then dropped the second one. Same deal, will filled it, called, they took it. They stored the PODS locally near Bragg, and held them there until we contacted them when we were ready for them to be delivered to our new home. They handle transporting them (in our case from Ft. Bragg, NC to southern NH), and delivered them when we needed them. Once they were empty, they came and picked them up.

For the weight, they forgot to weigh them empty before dropping them off to us in NC. So we had them weighed full before delivery in NH, and then when they were picked up empty they did an empty weigh for us. DH turned in the receipts and handled the reimbursement part of it since he was the SM. I could ask him for more info on that part of it if you need it.

Overall, using PODS was a great experience for us. We would use them again even for a local move. Nothing was damaged. The containers are locked and then tagged with tamper-proof numbered tabs. The tabs are thick metal tabs that have to be cut off to get the container open. They're not considered secure, they can be easily cut but they are numbered and can't be put back on once cut, so you would know that your containers are safe. We were allowed (I believe required) to put our own padlocks on them and retain the keys ourselves, and then they sealed them with the tabs.

I would take whatever DITY brief is offered at your post, and be sure you are aware of what your DITY allowance is. It's based on rank and whether there are dependents, not sure if the number of dependents makes a difference. I think there's also a weight limit involved somewhere. The brief covers the do's and don'ts, we took notes and had no complications or anything when it came time to move and then file the paperwork.

And it's really cool to watch them drop and pick up the PODS. This robot creeper comes off the back of the flatbed, it's like a remote control car. I think that's the best part for the drivers!!

  • We usually do a partial, DITY.
  • Hey, again! I've been MIA for a couple weeks, my stepson was here and it's been busy!

Thanks for the additional responses. I think we are going to do a partial DITY. My younger brother was going to help but ended up taking some summer classes, and a few of my husband's friends are going to a training, so we are going to have less help than I originally expected. It's been particularly hot lately (south Georgia), and I'm having flashbacks to my college/moving days. Too HOT!

On a side note, a neighbor had one of those PODS things and it was one of the coolest things I've seen, haha!
