  • I feel like this is fine.  I see nothing wrong with saying hey friends I am making food and providing snacks, bring whatever you want to drink.  I would not be offended by this if it were me.  I would disagree if this were a party or gift giving event (like a wedding).  But a casual get together - totally acceptable!

  • For casual get togethers, I'd feel guilty showing up without bringing something! Or at least offering to do so. It's pretty much expected amongst my friends and extended family. That's not to say I expect people to bring a main entree or to provide all of the alcohol. Instead, it's common to bring a light appetizer or dessert, or perhaps a bottle of wine or some fun mixers.

wow! so, does that mean that my friends don't have "good etiquette"? Because unless they ask and I ask them to BYOB they would just show up without anything! Hmmm, I can't help but wonder about this now!

Personally, I feel like you should always come with something in hand for the hostess as a small thanks for the time, money, etc. she has expended. It doesn't need to be food or even BYOB, just some sort of token of appreciation. It just so happens that it's usually food / BYOB amongst my friends. When else do you get a chance to make one of those desserts or apps you pinned Stick out tongue?

  • I do this often.  Actually I don't really drink, and most of my friends know this.  So they understand that everyone is better off if they make the alcohol selections instead of me.

I think it's cultural or even dependent on circle of friends.  My circle of Friends and family is generally pretty low key and have always been of similar background, so we tend to do pot luck, or the host will do the main dish and or desserts and everyone else brings sides, drinks appetizers or desserts.

However if the host is significantly more wealthy than the other, I kind of feel like they shouldn't expect guests to bring anything, but if the guests off than to go with it.

  • I think this is definitely acceptable!  My group of friends would usually operate similarly - whoever hosts provides a couple of snack or appetizer options, and maybe type of beverage depending on the occasion.  Generally each guest brings a little something whether it's another food or dessert item or some type of beverage to share.

If it's a special occasion and the host is going to provide a meal or all drinks, we would normally specify via word of mouth, facebook invite, whatever.  I guess we are low-key for the most part.  Don't expect a formal invitation unless someone's getting married!
