  • How about you give us some information about your dog? Different dogs can stay crated for differing amounts of time. Puppies can't stay crated as long as older dogs, since they need to go out more often.

That being said, my Boxer used to be crated several hours at a time, with a few rare occasions of her having to be in there for 11 hours. That is not the norm, though!!

She's graduated to being allowed to stay out in the house while we're at work, but she still doesn't typically have to be in all day long without a potty break; if we have a long day, I get someone to come over and let her out.

  •  I have  14 month pit bull boxer mix and a 14 week pit bull. I'm obviously expecting different answers for the both of them.

This is really dog specific. How long have you left the 14-month-old alone before? How long has he/she had to hold it at one time?

For the puppy: he/she shouldn't be expected to go more than about 4 hours between potty breaks right now. Puppy age in months +1 hour (max) is how long they can hold it. So a 3-month-old puppy can usually go 3-4 hours between breaks.

This is obviously longer overnight, since they're sleeping.

The other thing you have to consider is how much exercise/stimulation they're getting when they're not crated/you're around. If they're getting tons of exercise and mental stimulation to wear them out, they'll be more likely to happily hang out in the crate than if you put them in there full of energy.

  • Ditto Lucky - how long a dog can go between potty breaks does depend on the dog's age as well as their level of housebreaking (there are adult dogs who aren't housebroken and would need to go out more often in order to train them).  There are also special circumstances (such as if a dog is sick, stressed, etc.) when you may want to revert back to housebreaking 101 and take them out very frequently.

I have 2 dogs (ages 5.5 and 6.5), both of whom are crate trained (though they have earned their freedom and are now baby-gated into one room of our house while we are gone).  When they were crated, they would be crated for approximately 5-6 hours in the morning; then their walker comes and takes them out for 30-40 minutes; then they were crated again for approximately 4-6 hours until DH or I got home, at which point they get another 30-40 minute walk.

When Teddie was a puppy, we made sure he was never crated more than his age in months +1 (as Lucky said). So when we got him at 13 weeks old, we took him out every 3-4 hours (more often when we were potty training him to make sure we set him up for success), gradually increasing that time as he got older and could hold it longer.  We adopted Skippy when he was almost 4 years old, so he could already hold it longer. Still, at first, we treated him like a puppy and took him out very frequently to re-inforce the rule that he should potty outside and to make sure he was actually housetrained like the rescue said (he was!).

  • We have a 3 yr old boxer mix and a 1 yr old English Mastiff, and we try to leave them crated no more than 9 hrs max.
  • We have a 9 month old puppy. When she first came home at 8 weeks, we crated her for the full day (8 hours) and we had someone come and take her out twice a day (once in the morning and once in the afternoon). Since she was about 6 months old we have had someone come and let her out once a day - around noon. She's always done very well in the crate. In fact, we have tried to leave her alone outside of the crate when we leave for a short period of time (i.e. an hour max) and she kind of panics. She seems to feel most at ease in her crate.

  • My two are crated 9-10 hours/day. When they were puppies, obviously, the answer was different.

  • We have a 3 year old Lab/German Shepherd/American Staffordshire mix.  At first we would only crate her for 3-4 hours at a time with quick breaks in between to go outside.  The longest she has been crated is about 10 hours, but that is not very common.  She has been very well behaved for about 1 year now so when she is home she is free to roam the house alone with the exception of a few rooms that we close the door to (bathrooms and 2 guest bedrooms).  When we travel to our parents house we crate her for a maximum of 10 hours, but it is usually more like 8.

    Good luck!
