Mastitis?

Anyone get mastitis after weaning?  We weaned completely about a week ago. I thought things were fine, but in the last few hours my right breast has become so hard.  I'm not seeing any red spot like I did last time I had it, but the pain and lump seems to be right behind the nipple.

Anyone experience anything similar?  I'm waiting for a call back from the doctor.

Re: Mastitis?

  • I had it when I started to wean Jake :(  A bit different though, in that I was just starting to wean (had only cut out 1 pumping session and 1 nursing session)  I had the red spots, fever, chills, etc....they gave me an antibiotic and I felt like a new person the next day.  I hope you feel better soon!

  • If you don't feel like you have the flu (fever, chills, aches) then it could just be a clogged duct. Sometimes if you clear it quickly it won't turn into mastitis. I would try to hand express and put a heating pad or hot, wet washcloth on it when you get home. A hot shower plus hand expressing would be good, too.
