Why is my puppy yelping?

It started two nights ago, Sunday. I brought him home from a playdate with his brother & father, he yelped as if someone had stepped on him and ran away with his tail tucked between his legs, as if frightened when we tried to pick him up.

We thought it was just some crazy, random, one time thing.

Then, yesterday morning, I was about to leave for school when he woke up and starting yelping and crying, and licking his private parts, again with his tail tucked between his legs. I had to go, but my mom said that this behavior persisted until around noontime. She put him on the couch because it seemed to happen mostly when he was on the ground. When I came home, I was going to call the vet and see if something was wrong, but then he started acting normal again. I kept him in my room and nothing seemed to be wrong, except that he was a little less energetic than usual.

Now, it's happened again, and I don't know what's causing it. He won't eat the food I've set out, but he'll eat treats. He doesn't want to play, and he really seems like he's in pain. This isn't constant, it'll happen for a minute or so then it'll stop. There's also no area that we touch which causes him pain. It doesn't look like he has any ticks or fleas. What's wrong? :/

He's a ~6month old Shih Tzu :)

Thanks everyone!

Re: Why is my puppy yelping?

  • Something could have happened while he was playing that is stressing him out.

However, it does sound like he is in pain. Given his behaviour and the fact that he isn't eating might mean that something may bothering him. I would take him to the vet to be safe.

If you have checked his body and doesn't seem to feel pain, you should check his gums. When dogs have health issues their gums will usually turn a grey colour. If they are grey, you should take him in as soon as possible.

Good luck! I hope he feels better soon!

  • You've let this persist for 2 days. It's time to contact your vet, not be asking the interwebs for a diagnosis.

It's entirely possible this is a behavior thing and something is freaking him out, but your vet might be able to do a more thorough evaluation and find out if something really is causing him pain.

  • I agree with the others - please take that sweet puppy to the vet. It could be anything, could be nothing. Better safe than sorry.
  • When you go to the vet, take a fresh urine sample with you.

I agree that a vet visit seems to be in order.  For me, there are a few things that warrant a vet trip: (1) refusing food (I have pugs, and they love food more than anything else); (2) not peeing/pooping for more than 24-36 hours; and (3) any clear sign of pain (which the yelping seems to be).  Of course, there are other things for which I would seek vet attention, but these are the ones that have proven to be the clearest signs of a problem for my dogs. I hope you can figure out what's going on!

Sounds like neck and/or back issue! He needs to see a vet ASAP and in the meantime DO NOT give him any 'at home' pain meds aka aspirin! If you can't get him into a vet today, try raising his food bowl so he doesn't have to bend his head down really far, keep it level so his back and head are on one plane for him to eat.
