Ground Ivy-How to get rid of it!!!!

So the owner before us planted some ground ivy, which naturally spread everywhere. It isn't terrible to look at, but I am not a fan of how out of control it is getting, and so DH and I want to remove it.

We have attempted pulling it up, but it is so hard because of the multiple roots along each strand. Plus they tangle all up and it is just back-breaking work. We did also try a spray which was for poison ivy (which was also in there, fun times), but it didn't seem to have any effect on the regular ivy.

 Anyone have any other ideas?

  • Round Up.  Kills everything!  (I have pets and do not like to spray it - but unfortunately its the only thing that works for me).

    Good luck!

  • Our previous owners planted it all along one side of the house so it was all over the ground and growing up the side of the house. AWFUL! We spent a whole weekend tearing it down, digging it up, pressure washing the stucco, and putting a whole thing of round up around the side of the house. This was last spring and there are still little sprigs of ivy coming up this year. It's a pain but if you don't dig up the roots (which are gigantic btw) it'll come back even after your put round up on it.

I don't understand why people plant this stuff! Good luck :)

  • I just went through this with pachysandra (ground cover ivy-like plant). Terrible roots. Ugh. I was at it for about 3 days and kept seeing roots whenever I closed my eyes!

I called in some reinforcements (my mom!) and we yanked all of it.  I know some roots are still there, so we'll just keep pulling as we go.  If your garden is empty aside from that stuff, then yes - definitely spray.  Unfortunately we had a dozen or so other plants to try and save in that same area. Perhaps a ground sheild of some sort might help - the ones they use for weeds?

Pull it up then round up the whole area.  Ivy is one of those plants that are hard to get rid of.  I am still trying to get rid of Rose of Sharon and vetch which is a version of ivy.  I have been fighting this battle for 5 years.
