From Dark Hair to Light Hair Help

Hi ladies,

Okay, I have dark brown hair (on the dye box it would be the darkest brown before going into the black colors) and I am really strapped for extra money right now. However, I desperately want to have lighter hair, like a caramel blond.  Years ago I tried doing this via box of dye from walgreens, and needless to say it did not go well (hello strange orange hair) and had to dye my hair back to a dark color.  Normally, if I had the money, I would go walk into my local salon and get it done correctly and professionally, but because of my long hair, this would start at $100 not including tip or any extra dollars due to amount of product being used.  Is there anyone with tips on how to pick out the correct color at like a salon store where they have the professional dyes?  Currently my hair is dyed, but it is dyed its natural color and was last dyed in July.  Any and all tips would be helpful, Thanks!

Re: From Dark Hair to Light Hair Help

  • Because your hair will still have the dye in it from recent coloring (even from July, it will be grown out but it's still there), it will be really hard to have consistent coverage. ESPECIALLY trying to go lighter. You would have to do a color correction (strip the dye) and then try to lighten. It will be really damaging for your hair.

I have long naturally dark hair and spent a ton of money at the salon ($300+) getting dark-color box dye out of my hair that I did while in college. I had to let my hair "rest" for a bit before I could even think about trying to do a lighter color.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but I went thru it and it was a major pain.

  • I'm naturally blonde and go darker for fun.  I dye dark myself because it's easy and cost efficient.  When my hair is dyed dark it's impossible for me to get back blonde (my natural color) without help from a salon.  Every time I have tried I end up with orange.

Anytime you want to go more than 2 shades lighter than your natural color you'll need a pro to do it.  If you really want to take a risk to save money, I'd suggest looking into a coloring appointment at a local hair styling school.  It's a gamble still, but it's a cheaper gamble and at least if they make a mistake hopefully a teacher there can fix it.

  • It won't work. If your hair is previously colored you cannot lighten it with color predictably. Also your hair near your scalp will color much lighter than the previously colored hair. It's going to be a disaster. If you can't afford to go to a salon right now I would just not mess with it. It will cost you a lot more to fix it than it would have to just get it right from the beginning, not to mention the damage that will be done to it.
