Alternatives to birth control pills?

We've been married just over 4 months, and I'm almost 30. My hormones are changing and so my doctor switched me to a higher dose pill (Yaz to Necon--huge difference), which has made me gain weight and feel anxious. My husband and I want to try FAM and some sort of spermicide. We would like to start trying for a baby in about a year or so, so I don't want an IUD or anything hormonal. Any suggestions or feedback?

Re: Alternatives to birth control pills?

  • I just started using FAM, and I think it's a great alternative to hormonal BC. If you're going to try it, buy Taking Charge of your Fertility and read a few times. You should plan to use a barrier for at least a couple of months, maybe even longer since you are coming off of the pill. Also check out fertilityfriend.com and tcoyf.com, which are both convenient places to log your fertility signs while using FAM. fertility friend is very much geared toward TTC, while tcoyf is easier for birth control use but isn't as good of a website (IMO).

Good luck, and feel free to post or PM me with any other questions.

  • AFAIK, spermicide is intended to be used alongside some sort of barrier method, like a condom or a diaphragm, and is not very effective as BC on its own.
  • I do FAM and have done it for over a year.  I love it.  One of the PP posted a lot of good information.  I track everything on Fertilityfriend.com.  See my siggy. We used back up for at least 3 months till I got the hang of it. If you have any questions, I am happy to help. Smile
  • I just recently had the Implannon put in. It is about the size of a match stick and goes in your upper forearm. It is good for three years and you can have it taken out whenever you want. Apparently it is safe to breastfeed while you have it in, so I would think it wouldn't have very many hormones. I had it put in this past week so I don't really have too much expierence to share!

  • Can you get implanon and get it taken out early to start a family do you know?
  • I took shots of depo provera - one shot every 12 weeks.  No worry about a period.

Best thing since sliced bread for me!
