What do you pay for meat???

Seeing as how much we love to talk about the price of meat Big Smile.... what is your price guide line, and what do you consider a good deal?

Re: What do you pay for meat???

  • It depends.  Hillary and I were talking about this the other day.  :)  We're like old married ladies now, aren't we?!

I shop the "Manager's Special" for meat.  I see what the Manager has put coupons on, or a sign up for, and I buy that.  A couple of weeks ago, I got all-natural boneless-skinless chicken tenders for $1.37/lb.  Over the weekend, we got Smithfield fresh pork tenderloin for $1.98/lb.  I buy it up, use some for dinner and vacuum-seal and freeze the rest in practical 2-person portions.

My vacuum sealer was the best thing I got off my registry - they say that meat will last 3 years in the freezer with it - but we use it faster than that, so it's GREAT.  And the meat really does defrost "fresher" than any other way I ever froze meat before.

Back to prices.  I will not by meat or fish unless it is at LEAST on sale.

Ok, off to make lunch.  Thanks, Cayla!

  • Ok, so I did a little online circular viewing -

    Shaw's has: (starting Friday)

    Boneless Chicken Breast  - $1.79/lb

Chicken Legs, Drumsticks, Thighs - $1.49/lb

    Market Basket has:  (until Saturday)

Center Cut Pork Chops - $1.79/lb.

    Ground Turkey - $2.49

    Butterflied Lamb Legs - $4.49lb

    Mussels - $3.59/lb

I didn't see anything at Hannaford's that wowed me - these are worth checking out IMO.  And while I am there - Manager's Specials!!  :)

  • Kristin you are awesome! I was looking too... well trying- work was getting in the way Stick out tongue I think I will pick up some boneless/skinless and some pork chops. I could buy legs, but I don;t like thighs- mine or chicken! Does anyone make anything with drum sticks besides fried or baked?

My deal of the week last week was a package of two big pork chops that were originally $2 something and with the managers coupon I got them for 75 cents! I also got a couple packages of pork strips for stir fry with coupons for like 60 cents a package... score! I wonder if there are better days to go for managers specials... hmmmm...

  • Oh I love this topic.  Obviously!

My meat market has a sale on drumsticks for .49/lb.  I'm going to do them up appetizer style when we have people over to watch a game.

I never buy anything unless it's on sale.

This week nothing spectatular at my grocery store (Stop & Shop) so I might just go with what's available in the freezer.  Also checking out the Hilltop butcher shop near me to stock up a bit this weekend

  • Kristen, you SO just saved me time!!!! I was wondering what was on sale this week at MB for meats, so we can stock up the freezer, and you totally did all the work for me..... hehe much appreciated LOL!!!

  • we actually just bought a side of beef and paid something like 2 or 3 per pound for homegrown.  We also just bought two turkeys that dressed out at 27 and 28 lbs apiece.  I really don't know what we pay because we buy in bulk like that and it's all grown locally.
  • NHCats - Wow, 2-3/lb is great.  And local?  That's fantastic.

Andrea - there was more meat on sale at MB - but these are the things out of what was there that I would get.  The cuts of beef that are on sale this week weren't ideal "steak" cuts and I don't need any more stew/braising meats right now.

Feef - $.49 for drumsticks?  I use them all the time.  I make a pasta sauce with them, in addition to making giant buffalo wings (DH likes them - makes him feel macho), and regular oven-baked chicken.

Cayla -  I like thighs for that same pasta sauce that I mentioned above -

Here's the recipe - from the old NH Nesties Recipes site -

    MrsA2Be's Chicken and Mushroom Sauce

    Ingredients:
8 pieces chicken (breasts, drumsticks, thighs - doesn't matter, but bone-in)
    ? cup olive oil
    2 large onions, sliced
5 cloves garlic, cut in half
    1 can mushrooms (drained)
    6 oz. red wine
    2 cups chicken broth
    ? tsp. dry oregano
    salt (to taste)
    black pepper (to taste)
    dash Gravy Master (for color)

    Preparation:
Wash and dry the chicken pieces.
Heat the oil in a dutch oven. When oil is hot, add chicken and lightly brown.
Add sliced onions, garlic, mushrooms, and wine. Simmer for about 5 minutes.
Add chicken broth, salt, pepper, oregano and Gravy Master.
Cover and simmer for 1? to 2 hours.
    Serve over linguine.

  • Yeah I just reread it, it was something else.  I'm not focused today at all.

  • Sorry for the double-post - I added the web address and hit post and it put the second one and wouldn't let me delete the first.
