Bathroom rug won't fit under door

So we bought our house about 3 months ago so I'm slowly decorating because I generally suck at it lol. But I have this black and white rug I bought before owning our home that I love. It pretty much was my inspiration so I was quite sad when I saw it doesn't fit under the door. I've been googling how to handle it and I came up with sanding it down. Figured I'd just do it from underneath but its not working about great. Any other ideas? Just not sure how long I need to sand and its tearing up the back of the door. Since it was a foreclosure they repainted but didn't do the best of jobs so I do need to touch up but I want this rug to fit! Its my favorite! Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Re: Bathroom rug won't fit under door

  • Not sure if you've done it, but you need to remove the door from the hinges first. Depending on how much needs to be taken off, sanding alone may not do it, the door may need to be "planed", which is using a planing tool to strip off more than simple sanding. Google "planing a door" and you should get a lot of videos. If you don't know how to remove the door from the hinges, google that too.

Home improvement stores like Lowe's or Home Depot often have a lot of helpful people. If you have a chance go to your nearest one and ask for help. They have tools you can rent, maybe rent an electric sander to do a better job than hand sanding. Or, they may be able to recommend another way.

My door gets caught on my bathroom rugs occasionally, and I have to move the rug to close the door. Can you situate the rug farther from the door, or place it in a different spot?

    Good luck.

  • Definitely take the door off of its hinges.  Although honestly - for a non permanent fixture like a bathroom rug I wouldn't sand down a door.
