Vacation Days

How does everyone decide how to spend their vacation days? I feel like I have so many weddings over the next year and I'm afraid that I will be using a handful of days (to take off of work on a Friday to travel to get to the wedding / or even rehearsal dinner) over the next year just for going to weddings. So there we go, an entire week of vacation days will really be used so I can attend weddings. And these weddings are specifically for very important people in my life / very good friends.

I guess I am just curious as to whether or not people really use the majority of their vacation days for other people (like going to someone's wedding) or for themselves. I feel like I don't see any time in the near future where I can just take a weekend for myself!

Re: Vacation Days

  • Must be nice to even have vacation time.

I don't get paid vacation days, but I DO take time off work for other people. I have not taken vacation days for just "myself" since my wedding last September, and even then it was just the two days before my wedding that I took off.

  • Right now I have 11 days a year that I have to take (otherwise I lose it).  This year, we're going on a vacation in June, so I'm taking 5 days there.  I may take 1/2 days on some Fridays so DH and I can go down to the river.  Other than that, I'll just end up taking random days throughout the rest of the year.

I don't like enough people to fly to that many weddings. I spend my vacation flying to visit family. Flying with my husband to things we want to do. Taking them off when family/good friends are in town to spend time with them. Maybe I'm selfish, but I want to spend my free time doing things I enjoy. Weddings aren't among them.

I'm lucky to have all my friends and family within driving distance.
  • In my personal experience from last year, I had earned a week of vacation. I promptly blew that so I could go on my honeymoon.

This year I get two weeks off. The nice thing is that the company I work for changed policies; I could actually give one of my weeks to my husband (since he is also employed there as well) Only big trip this year is to the zoo. Otherwise, banking the days in case of emergencies.

I guess as long as it is enjoyable or important to you, you could use the time for other people.

Although from the sounds of it, I'd say you've earned a day for yourself.

  • I spend 1 week for our summer vacation with my family. Then the rest of it is usually for random 3 or 4 day weekends to go see friends or family.  I have 3 weeks of vacation.

This year I may start banking some of it for maternity leave someday.

I work three part-time jobs (plus grad school), so I can take a fair bit of time off in the summer and in December--I just don't make any money.
  • FI will have six full weeks of vacation time to use between July 1st of this year and July 1st of next. It is paid and it will not roll over if he chooses not to use it.

Our current plan is..Two days off for the wedding. HOPEFULLY two weeks off in march for a large trip to FL to visit his family. A solid week off to travel around for Christmas. We also always take a long weekend to Boston to see a Bruins game every year so there is that as well.
