Salmon face-off

As I said in a previous post, I need to eat salmon.  My DH loves it.  It's so good for you.  The base of many a quick, fresh, dinner.

But, I can't dooo it! *whines*

Give me your yummy salmon recipes please and convince me that it's not too fishy for me!!!

Re: Salmon face-off

  • I am glad you saw my post below with my favorite (easy and yummy) salmon dish!! I used to worry that salmon would be too strong/fishy for me, so I would just eat tilapia instead. But I thought tilapia was so tasteless and BORING. So I took the plunge into salmon. It is sooooo much meatier and more filling than tilapia! And takes the same amount of prep/time to cook! It won't be fishy if you cook it right! It MUST be cooked at or above 350* in order to cook quickly and not turn out weird and gross. I always cook mine at 400*, personally.

Just take baby steps. Try other "less fishy" fish first (if you don't already eat it). Also, try making it a few different ways. Add lemon (or even orange) slices on top. Try it with your favorite steak seasoning. Or with lemon pepper seasoning. Make a dry rub for it like you would for chicken. And eat it with different sides until you find something you love. I love eating it with brown rice and/or quinoa. But I also will eat it with black or pinto beans- I just season the beans with the same stuff I season the salmon with. Saute some veggies on the side, or cook the salmon with the veggies in tinfoil. I have yet to find a vegetable that doesn't like salmon- carrots, broccoli, peppers, garlic, etc. (I'm making myself hungry...) Another really yummy thing on salmon is greek vinigarette (sp?). I will make plain (or seasoned with pepper) salmon and plain brown rice. When they are both done, I put the rice in a bowl, top it with salmon, then add greek vinigarette to my heart's content. Super yummy!

    I hope this helps!

  • ohio you arent alone!! salmon is too fishy for me too. i always buy tilapia instead, which i love.  funny thing is i love salmon as sushi!

I  think i might give the PP's recommendations a try and see how it comes out.  My DH likes salmon and says tilapia is boring too.

  • Salmon is one of my favorite fish to eat! DH and I love to marinate the fish in beer and BBQ sauce (whatever brands/kinds you like) for a few hours in the fridge. Wrap in a foil pouch and cook on a George Foreman grill for about 10 minutes or skin-side down on a grill until the salmon is almost flaky.

  • These ideas look awesome!  I love tilapia and most other white fish, but I never feel totally full with them.  I'm hoping if I can try salmon a few more times in different recipes I can develop a taste for it.

I'm thinking my problem is 1) I don't cook it the right way, and 2) I live in the middle of Ohio...no salmon here.  Although I do have some nice groceries where I can probably get decently fresh salmon.

Keep the recipes coming ladies! Thank you!

  • Also keep in mind that while salmon tends to be a bit of a stronger flavored fish, but fresh fish does not smell "fishy". That odor generally means that the fish is not the freshest. Are you using frozen salmon instead of fresh?

  • I usually get frozen, as any salmon that makes it here has usually been frozen at some point anyway.  I think I'm going to look at trying a nicer brand of "fresh" next time though.

  • This honey teriyaki salmon is the best ever! Honestly. People ask me for the recipe every time I make it. It marinades overnight, and is cooked on top of the stove in just a few minutes. It's a great weeknight meal because it comes together so quickly. The leftovers are great in a salad too!

yes. absolutely positively get the absolute freshest that you can. i dotn know about where you live but we have a ton of fish stores around (naturally-i live on an island) and the fish there is far better quality than the supermarket and is often fresher than the supermarket as well. so see if there is a fish store somewhere near you-even if it's a drive. it's worth it.

  • I'm an occasional lurker and late to the game but wanted to share...

This was the recipe that got my husband interested in salmon, now salmon is the only fish he will eat.  Of course it is full of cheese but its sooo yummy: http://www.dairygoodness.ca/recipes/gouda-goody

We also like it rubbed with jerk seasoning, its such a strong flavour that you don't taste any fishiness.

Or make a marinade that is 1 part pure maple syrup and 1 part dijon mustard.
