How to down play a large garage

Hi All,

My hubby and I are getting ready to purchase our first home. One of my LEAST favorite things that seems to be very common in new homes these days.....The house that is completely overshadowed by the garage. I love the house on the inside but it really bothers me that when you pull up/face it head on all you really see is GARAGE! Any tips would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Re: How to down play a large garage

  • I hear ya!

Some houses are all garage and have one front window and a front door!

I think you have two choices.

First, buy an older home with a smaller garage or one with a side garage.

Or, build your own house and buy a lot that allows you to have a side garage entry.

  • This drives me crazy as well. We are currently building and 90% of the floor plans we liked had the garage as a dominent feature of the home.

  • I think we might change the garage door....maybe get one with windows for decor to soften the appearance or something. We are getting a fantastic deal on the home so this is just one of those things I'm going to have to work with. Thanks for your help! :)
  • Could you plant some small trees on each side of the garage?  That would take some of the focus away, as well as other landscaping features like flowers in pots.  A different door might make a difference too, one with lots of windows.  You could also play up the home's entrance to shift the focus away from the garage.  .

  • You are in luck.  A friend of mine just started a hobby home improvement blog.  One of her first DIY blogs was about dressing up a garage door affordably. She explains step by step how to do it, it's not much really, just adding faux handles and latches to make it look a little more upscale.

here is the link, pictures included.  Yours may already have this look, but if not, I think it would be worth your time!   http://www.bluegrasspearls.blogspot.com/2013/04/diy-garage-door-update.html
