Ideas needed for high fat low carb food for 22 mos old

Eamon is very little & we took him to the GI dr on Monday to rule out some issues & to see what we can do to get him to gain weight.  He wants us to see a nutritionist but its not covered by my insurance will be $180+ a visit.   So I'm trying to get some ideas on high fat low carb food (low carb in case he is taking in too many carbs which causes toddler diahrrea).  But I don't think he carb overloads so that's not a #1 concern to me.  More fats is what I am striving for.

He is a good eater but shuns any kind of meat mostly exc. some pork.  Loves fruit, veggies.  Not a potato fan, yes to noodles, some bread.   The GI dr said add butter and syrup to his pancakes Stick out tongue - the butter we do arlready but I'm not sure the straight HFCS syrup we use will help him much.

Any advice welcomed for my 21 pounder!

  • So, I'm sure it's still loaded with sugar, but after reading some labels, I found that Log Cabin brand syrup does not have any HFCS!  Just a thought :)

How does he do with dairy products?  you could load him up with the higher fat content cottage cheese and yogurt (I know stonyfield farms makes a full fat vanilla one), or just regular cheese, if he'd eat that? Eggs? Avocado?

  • I was also going to suggest sticking to full fat dairy products, eggs and avocado.  (If he's not an avocado fan, there is an avocado pasta recipe on Pinterest that might help him eat it.)

  • DD was on the small side as well, and the doctor recommended using olive oil on everything so we can get some healthy fats.  So I put it on everything.  Roasted veggies; oatmeal, noodles.

Mac and cheese with real cheese

Do you do peanut butter yet?

    Ice Cream

Will he eat meat if it's prepared a certain way? or doused in a yummy sauce?

    Chicken Alfredo

    BBQ'd Pork

    Bacon

    Sausage

My 2 yo loves yogurt. Noosa is one that's full fat and tastes great.

    What about black olives?

I also wanted to add that my DS got a lot of services through early intervention, including seeing a nutritionist.  I have no idea what the criteria is for qualifying to see a nutritionist through EI, but it may be something you can look into.

  • guacamole (both of my girls love it), whole milk, peanut butter, pediasure

  • My 28 month old finally weighs 23 lbs.  We were on operation fatten my kid up in the last 4 months.  Some of the tips we were given:  butter in everything!  Full fat dairy -harder to find than you would think- fyi- Trader Joe's sell a whole milk cheddar cheese stick.  Chobani Greek yogurt (we freeze the tubes and it is M's daily afternoon snack), peanut/almond butter with Ritz crackers is her before bed snack.

M is also a fruit and veggie fan.  She would live off tomatoes, strawberries, and bananas if I let her. You might want to try decreasing high fiber foods as well.  I was worried about her getting enough to eat that I was giving M too much milk. Now I supplement with extra high calorie, healthy snacks.  M is much more willing to eat meat if it is in a soup/stew.

I found this blog especially helpful:   http://chunkymonkeymenus.blogspot.com

Definitely call Alliance for Infant and Toddlers.  M just started speech therapy and we discussed her weight gain struggles during intake.  I was told by the coordinator that  a nutritionist is available.

  • thanks everyone - great ideas!  I just got a call from the nutritionsist since I advised the dr that my insurance didn't cover it & she just asked me to send a food log & she would look at it and give some input.   Not that we buy alot of fat free or low fat but now that its on my radar I will be looking more closely at everything.
