How to decide on wall colors?

How do you decide on wall color?! We know we like browns, tans, greys but deciding what to put where is tough...

Re: How to decide on wall colors?

  • It's really helpful to use a floorplan of your house to figure out the paint colors for all the rooms.  I did this when I did the paint planning for my first floor, and it was soooo helpful to see the colors in different places, and make sure that they all look good together and flow really well.

Check out my blog post to see how I went in doing this!

  • A fiend of mine is a professional painter, and has done some of the most expensive homes in the area, so we got his perspective and recommendations.   H knows all the latest trends, both good and bad and is familiar with how many of the colors look.  He came and looked at our carpet, flooring, backsplash trim and lighting and helped us narrow it down.  We were all over the place and couldn't decide between greens grays blues or golds... So he recommended the family of colors he thought would tie in the best and then we tried out samples of them all before hand.
  • Everyone has given great advice! I would just add to not forget the purpose of the room. For example, yellow is lovely, but it might be too strong for a bedroom. And also, remember that any wall color you pick will affect the perception of size and light in a room. Darker colors like aubergine will make a room look warmer, but also smaller and darker, whereas a light blue might have the opposite effect, making the room look bigger and lighter, and a bit colder as well.
