Hardwood under carpet...PIP

So the carpet in the house we just got is hideous blue (in really good condition though!) However, there is hardwood already underneath the carpet! Upstairs, one of the bedrooms carpet has been taken out already so we got a little preview of what the hardwood was like. Wondering what it would take to make these floors nice (if we did every room, we'd be looking at, entry way, living room, dining room, master br, stairway, 2 bedrooms + hallways)...how long would it take to accomplish something like this? how much would it cost est.?

Heres a picture of what were working with...

Re: Hardwood under carpet...PIP

  • We moved into the home I live in over 18 years ago. The living room has lovely hardwood floors that were varnished and have stayed amazing. I know there is hardwood floors under carpet in every room.

We pulled up the carpet in my bedroom after I married my husband back in 2011, and we switched bedrooms with my daughter. We found lovely hardwood floors underneath. Once I took all the carpet out, I found a few areas that might need work (looks like a kid from the prior owners was locked in the room and used a knife to make circles in the middle of the room out of anger.........don't know how else to explain the markings, LOL).  However, that area would be covered by our king sized bed.

I purchased some kind of hardwood floor wax with the name "orange" in it (sorry, I don't have any around to check). I got it at Lowe's. Used a sponge mop to put it on the marked hardwood floors, it drank it up and looked like new, except for where the scratches were. But it did make the floors look lovely. They still do. And, this was the room where my daughter had spilled half a gallon of lavendar paint on the carpet when we were painting it years before..........didn't even soak through to the floor.

If it were me, I'd move along slowly and do one room at a time. Start with a smaller room if you want, or the room where you want to make a statement, like the living room. See what the floors look like with the carpet gone. It's not an easy job, because there's usually "tacking" around the outside of the room, which is some plywood strips with nails/tacks sticking up, plus there may be staples holding the carpet padding down that have to be removed with pliers. But, if the floor is in good condition, for the time being, if you want, you can simply wax it with that "orange"stuff and wait to sand, stain and varnish when you can afford it. Or, it might be fine without it.

Eventually we'll be doing all the rooms to the dismay of my out-of-fashion husband who likes carpet. I keep telling him hardwood floors are the big thing now, but he doesn't want to hear it. He grew up with carpet and likes it. I grew up with hardwood floors and like it along with the bulk of the population, LOL.

I can't tell you what it would cost, because like us, you might find the floors are in great condition and don't need anything but a good waxing

    Good luck.

  • We did ours ourselves 2 years ago. It took 3-4 days, 1 to sand, 1-2 to stain and then seal. It was worth it, not hard at all. Ours were in terrible condition. We weren't sure it was going to work. Some areas are very "rustic" haha. But I love them. We spent between 350-500 total for our 1000sf

  • My best friend and her DH had the hardwood professionally refinished in their kitchen and family room. I do know that the sanding process was quite dusty.

If you can, you may want to try and tackle this project (if the floors do need to ba sanded) before moving in your furniture, clothing, etc. just so you don't have to clean all that up.

  • We recently had our 60 year old floors refinished to match our brand new hardwood in our kitchen and sunroom. For about 1200sqft of refinishing, it was almost $2,000. It was so worth it though to have it match the new floors, and the 60 year old floors look brand new as well. It's a choice I am SO glad we made.

Tip though: have another place to stay! The smell of the sealant or whatever the topcoat is actually hurt to breathe in. It was horrible. We spent three days at my sister's house after the first and second coat.
