Camping

What are the closest campgrounds to Pittsburgh?  I was thinking about going camping for a week but in the case DH can't get the time off work an ability to get back downtown would be good.

  • Raccoon Creek State Park near Clinton in Beaver County.

  • DH took Noah to Keystone...I think it was about 45mins-hour from us (it's right off of Rt. 22).  (I think you live fairly close to me - Forest Hills, right?)

  • We camp at Shawnee State Park.  It's a little less than 2 hours away.  Not sure if you want to go that far or how much you want to "rough it."  Shawnee has showers and toilets, so it's not totally roughing it.  It's always a family event for those we go with so we usually have about five kids under 6, so w always liked having water/toilets/showers.

There is a large lake there -- you can paddle boat, canoe, fish and swim.

ETA:  Yeah.. just read that you want the ability to get back downtown.  Shawnee is probably not the place to go. :)  At least it's something to keep in mind when you CAN get away!!

Yea DH is trying to save his vacation time for when we close on a house and need the time to move and set up. I just really want to go camping.

  • we went to Jellystone Yogi bear park in Mill Run near Falling water. I live in Dormont and it was about 2 hrs. not sure that is "close enough to the city for you" but we went with friends for 2 nights over memorial day a couple years ago and it was great. close enough to make just a couple nights worth it.

It was really nice, lots of things to do for the kids and cabins or space for tents or campers, 2 nice pools and a spray park.
