Interview attire for hot climates

Hi Everyone! I'm revving up my job search and may possibly have an interview very soon. I am originally from up North but currently live in Florida, female and have a black suit that I usually wear which is a skirt, white shirt and a jacket. I have worn this suit for interviews here in Florida, but it is way too hot! Luckily my interviews have been in well climate controlled offices, except for one, where I was so hot I couldn't concentrate. That was my last one and I've decided I can't wear the suit anymore. I have a dress that I wore to my brother's wedding - the whole dress is black and it is sleeveless. The bottom hits just above the knee.
I would like to use it for interviews, but I'm afraid sleeveless is possibly inappropriate? It is a very professional looking dress, but I'm just not sure. I know I can't wear the suit again (especially that we will be in the 90s later this week).

Re: Interview attire for hot climates

  • If you can find a white cotton blazer to wear with it, that would be perfect for an interview.
  • i agree a nice blazer or a cardigan would be perfect.

  • I say when in doubt, where a suit.  My company will not pass someone through the interview process if not dressed business professional.  I think a dress with a cardigan qualifies as business casual.  I think you should just suck it up and wear the suit for the interview... it's not worth losing a good job based on attire.
  • Ditto PPs who suggested a cardigan or lighter blazer, maybe even a flowy blouse that you could leave unbuttoned.

What kind of shirt are you wearing under your suit?  I wear tank tops and halter tops under mine all the time.  With the jacket on- nobody ever needs to know.

Buy a light weight suit from the local mall.  You will need a new wardrobe for Florida very few outfits will transfer to summers down there.  I was in the Navy in Orlando for 18 months and lived in Oklahoma for 2 years.
  • Is the dress strapless (not just sleeveless) like your link? If so, I would definitely not even wear it, even with a blazer or a cardigan. You can tell when someone is wearing a strapless dress, and it is definitely not a professional look.

I agree with PP that you should still wear a suit, even if you can't afford a new one. If you are wearing a non-sleeveless shirt (i.e. appropriate) under the suit, you can always take the jacket off if it's very hot until right before you walk in.

    Buy a light weight suit.

If the dress was appropriate for a wedding it would never be appropriate for work.

  • Doesn't this link take us to the exact same website as the one for that wedding dress you were allegedly going to buy just a few days ago?

Because this totally isn't suspiciously vendor-ish or anything Confused

I think you need to stick to a more professional look. Can you buy a black pencil skirt and then a sleeveless silk top?

Maybe something like this - professional looking and can go well under a suit jacket.

Then, if they have air conditioning you can leave the coat on. Otherwise you can take it off and still look 100% professional.
