I DD my post... and more info

you all had a good point about the trolls... didn't even think about that. So that's why I DD.

As far as sneaking him in, when I called to ask about the pet policy, the only thing they told me was $200 deposit (they did not tell me this was per pet) and that if I have a dog it cannot be more than two feet tall from head to floor (that is a strange way to measure a dog IMO). They told us if we wanted the apartment to overnight an application and the checks. They did not tell us about the 2 pet limit.

When DH and I filled out the application, we listed all 3 down since we did not know about the limit & paid the $20 to overnight the checks and application. Well, the next day, they called me and said I cannot bring all 3 pets... I told them I found a home for one of the cats... but the fact we already told them we had 3 (and they are all listed on our application so we can't tell them we never said that)... do you think they will notice or be looking then? That is what DH is afraid of, he thinks we may even get evicted if we get caught. And we will be in a strange area, soooo far away from any friends/family or anything else familiar to us. What do you think?

  • I really hate to see your cat placed in a new home...

But...I tried to hide a cat in my apartment during college. She was discovered during a random inspectation. I didn't get evicted, but I did lose my security deposit.

  • Hmm ... I missed the original post, so I may be missing some of the details, but I can say that my mom had three cats in her apartment without permission for several years and never got busted. If it's something they made a big deal about at the beginning, then it's possible your apartment complex might be more strict but for the most part, they never check. I will say that it takes forevvvver to evict someone (like, months)--I know this because a friend of mine has had several terrible, non-rent-paying roomies--so if they put you on notice, you'd have a good amount of time to consider your options (either to find a new place to live or to re-home one of the cats).

What area are you moving to and when? (I missed the OP).

  • I missed the original post as well. Personally, rather than living somewhere that I would worry getting caught about having too many pets, I would find somewhere else to live. I would never even consider finding a new home for my pets (because mine are family to me).

  • Didn't see the OP, but...I live in an apartment complex (sorry to say) and we just had an inspection. One of the things they look for is number of pets. The list even has a checkbox for "pet limit exceeded", so it sounds like they're serious about this - at least where I live.

I'm sure there are a lot of ppl like the pp who have had extra pets w/o management knowing. But I've never had any my old apartments inspected this way until last month, so I have to wonder if it's a new trend in property management.

We were renting a privately owned house in the interim until we had to move due to foreclosure, which is the only reason we went back to a complex until we can buy - ugh, I can't wait.

  • Well to answer your questions, we are moving to Tulsa, OK on Nov 24. We have not had the opportunity to travel out there and check out the area looking for a place to live, which is why we chose to do a short term lease in an apartment. I have 2 cats and one dog. We looked and looked and called just about every apartment complex, but could not find a single one that would take our 45 pound dog (most apartments out there don't allow pets over 20 pounds.... one of our cats will be too heavy to live there!) AND two cats. The apartment complex we chose sounded the most promising-- until they had our application and money, then that's when we found out we were not given all the info. So we tried to find another place to live, but had no luck in finding one willing to work with our situation. I am just wondering if the problem was made worse though because we told them we had 3 pets but they are only allowing us to have two. This really sucks, I just wish we could have our own place.
  • SunMoon&Stars- did they tell you that they were going to do an inspection and when? or did they just show up and do it randomly? I am wondering if they have to give notice.... then I can just take one of the cats out of the house for the day, even if I have to take him to a boarding facility for the day or something.... I wonder if they can just show up for these inspections? Then again, I am moving to another state so the laws could be different there too....
  • We had inspections done occasionally to our apartment too and we always were given notice....usually wouldn't be too much, but a day or two in advance a flyer would be put on our door announcing it. So if you are just going to be there short term and rather than giving up any of your pets, I would probably sneak in the extra cat as well and just do like you mentioned and board her or during the day if an inspection is going to happen.

Yes we had notice, but as with march2008 it wasn't much - just a few days.

  • We always had at least 24 hours notice for any entry to our apartment for whatever reason unless we initiated the service call.

I would try to get away with the one cat being there and see how it goes.  It all may end up working ok.

My 4 cats are also like my little babies and I think I rather live in my car than give them up for any reason.

  • I think the laws can vary by state. When I lived in Michigan, the inspections were random and unannounced. But I believe it was a government or city inspection, so perhaps that's different than the biannual inspections typically carried out by the complex mgmt. Those I always receive a couple days notice.
