Training for Warrior Dash

My husband and I decided it was time for a health overhaul a few months ago (we weren't terrible, but definitely had an extra 10-15 lbs on) and since then have been pretty good - whole foods, fairly clean eating, and work outs a few times a week.  We started doing Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred together, me 5x a week with some cardio and he 30DS 3x a week.

I've been wanting to test out my new muscle and decided to sign up for the Warrior Dash (http://www.warriordash.com) in late July with some friends.  And now that its official I'm SO nervous about completing it (I've never done a race before in my life!).  I can't afford expensive NYC gyms, but I love working out at home (and JMs coaching style) and I found a great deal on Lifebooker for spin classes.  Below is my current workout schedule, but I would love some feedback from people who have done similar races on what helps you make it through!

Sunday: Shred level 2 & yoga

Monday: Double Shred (level 1 & 2)

Tuesday: Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism

Wednesday: Double Shred (level 1 & 2)

Thursday: Double Shred (level 1 & 2)

Friday: Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism

Sat: 45 min spin class

Re: Training for Warrior Dash

  • I haven't done the Warrior Dash or similar obstacle course, but I have done a couple half marathons. My only concern would be overdoing your training- you've got a lot going on. You don't want to burn out or worse, injure yourself, which would completely derail your training and possibly your race. Good luck!
  • I completed a Warrior Dash race last May, it was really fun. I wasn't in great shape when I began training and had an upset from an overuse injury that set me back several weeks and taught me a very important lesson. Don't try to do to much too fast. That said, if you are in adequate shape to amp up your training to your schedule you've laid out, go for it.

As for the Dash itself, its not bad. The climbs are the only really difficult part. (Or they were for me, as my poor upper body strength was not enough to haul my fat a&& over the inclines, as I learned when I slid on my butt all the way back down the first incline wall. I didn't try the rest of the wall climbs.) The run was invigorating and all the other obstacles were fun and very doable. Its a very fun and good goal to set for yourself for fitness. Have fun, good luck, and enjoy your beer and turkey leg at the end. :)
