First trimester anxiety?

Never been much if an anxious person but find myself feeling anxious a lot about this first trimester. Worried about miscarriage, birth defects, staying healthy etc. I think it's because it took us so much to get here but did any of you go through this?

Re: First trimester anxiety?

  • I went through it and I kind of still am. I felt like I was on auto pilot throughout most of my pregnancy and even now when baby is here. I guess it's part of a defense mechanism to protect myself from being hurt again. *shrug* After I passed each milestone, it was always a new worry. I didn't start to "relax" (haha, relax) until after the anatomy scan.

  • i worried the entire time. around 16w i began to somewhat believe the baby might actually come home with us, but i still had moments when i wasn't quite sure. like, the days leading up to our a/s. and then when the movement went away. and when it calmed down. i was sent to the ER/L&D at 17w and 27w because i called to complain of lack of movement and/or spotting. i was far too aware that something could happen straight through delivery, which was a good and bad thing.

so...does the anxiety go away? for most, yes. for all, not so much.

Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • Yes, it came and went.  I think it's totally normal to feel this way.  I still have random bouts of worry that something will go wrong, but I just try not to dwell on it.

  • My anxiety has been in overdrive too. I woke up at 3 am with a stomachache (most likely from eating like total crap yesterday) and was convinced I was having a m/c.

I spent the next hour freaking out until I remembered that I had been going all day, from a baby shower 2 hours from home to going to a local Celtic festival to going out to eat at 9:30 last night. Then I woke up with pink eye.

Who gets pink eye when they're 28?

Oh, and I've also been rambling like its my job.

  • I had a lot of heavy bleeding through all of first tri so I was really worried at first but then just kinda went numb inside to protect myself.  I hate that I did that but it was the only thing I knew to do because it was less stressful on baby (ironic huh?) that I not worry about it.  After the first tri it started getting better but I used a Doppler on a regular basis because I was determined something would happen and I would lose him too.  I guess the first miscarriage had me convinced I would never carry a baby to term.  Try to relax and take it one day at a time.  I liked to look forward to the next fruit on my ticker or the next bump pic as I started showing.  As for staying healthy, I would recommend going for a walk or doing yoga or whatever you find relaxing each night (or as often as you can manage) so that you can feel like you are making an effort to stay healthy without overdoing it, unless you exercised regularly beforehand.

Yup. I go through it too and this isn't my first time at the rodeo. I try do what a PP said and try not to dwell on it. Unfortunately, it's our lot in life because we will constantly be worried about our kids in and out of the womb!

As for being healthy, they say first tri is survival mode. You do what best you can especially if you're really sick and tired. As long as you're being kind to your body (no booze or drugs :) ) I'd say you're ahead of the game.

Mine was first, second, and third. Now it's a whole new world of anxiety. Go to l&D when YOU feel the need to, it was the only thing that made me feel better. If I was THAT worried (bleeding, less movement, what have you)...I went in.

I hope things get better for you.

  • Yes and I still get nervous at every Dr. appointment. Totally normal. Just remember to breath. I haven't found a good way to deal with it or I would offer better advice.
