Storing herbs

How do you store your herbs?  I've always just stuck them in the fridge, but it recently occurred to me that that might not be the best way.

This week I'm trying storing them like I would flowers, with the stems in a bit of water in mason jars on my kitchen table (the counter doesn't get any sunlight).  I'm interested to see if it helps them last longer.

  • I've done what you are doing before with basil, to purposely get it to sprout roots. I've also done it with green onions- they last for weeks for me that way if you keep the water fresh. I've never tried it with anything else though (I'm fortunate to have chives, oregano and thyme growing in my backyard, so I just use what I need from the plant).

  • I keep cilantro in the fridge with the stems in a cup filled with water and it lasts a really long time! That's the main herb I always have so I haven't really tried to store any other herbs for longer than a few days.

I do this sometimes but for the most part I store them in the fridge.
