Ripping out existing flower garden, and replacing with Veggies?

I have attached a pic of the current flower garden that my DH and I want to turn into a veggie garden. We would be keeping the fencing, zoning, etc, just rip out the flowers. My question is, how would you go about doing this? What tools would we need?

I would use a shovel to dig out the old plants then if  you have a tiller I would till up the rest of the ground.

Is it a butterfly garden? I'm wondering because they went to the trouble of building a nice fence around it.

  • Its hard to tell but your soil looks pretty dry. I`d make sure to add some top soil and organic matter (like compost) when you till it. Your plants are only as good as the soil they`re in!

I'm not sure. I think it is to keep the wild life out of it. Bears and Deer are common in this area.

That isn't a bear fence or a deer fence. It's a people fence. Like "do not mow'. There has to be some reason this oddly shaped garden, smack in the middle of an open space, exists, and has a protective barrier around it. It really looks like a butterfly garden to me. If that's the case, it would really be a shame to do away with it, because butterflies can't buy food at the store. They really depend on flowers.
