  • Why do you need a generator? Does the power go out frequently for long periods of time?  What are you worried about that is prompting you to get a generator?

If you are just thinking about a portable generator, you just run extension cords to plug directly into the generator.

  •  We have hot water heater with propane, not all electric.

When I got a quote for an automatic generac generator, with propane back up, it was like $8k. That didn't include the additional gas line the plumber would n?ed to install, which would be another $1k. We didn't do it and opted to cross our fingers.

3 power outages later that we're each 1 week long, we installed a transfer switch (needed since we're on well water) to a manual gas 5,000 watt generator that powers the necessities and a few extras for 9-12 hours on 1 fueling, and we keep a few containers as back up. It cost us about $2.5 k for the generator and electrical work. We used it the other night; DH had to pull out the machine an hook it up, so it took a bit longer than just flipping a switch, but seems worth the savings to us.
