Since playing is a topic -- trampolines: yay or nay?
We've been debating this for years! On one hand, I think it'd be fun to have a big trampoline (with enclosure), but I am slightly worried about injuries and maintenance. My parents picked up a pretty nice one from Aldi's for $200, but only time will tell if it's well made.
If you have one, is it worth the trouble? Or is it a novelty that wears off quickly? What do you have to do to protect it in winter?
Re: Since playing is a topic -- trampolines: yay or nay?
I am anti-trampoline. They scare me, and make me worry about the injuries. Not a big fan of bounce houses either to be honest. I would really only feel comfortable with EJ using one in a gym setting with supervision. Plus I think they look terrible in the yard.
In our old neighborhood someone had one and they always took off the middle in the winter and left the frame out.
ditto! I'm fairly certain with my kids ability to get hurt that we would end up in the ER!
I was thinking of bounce houses recently. I feel like those done seem as bad and can at least be easily put away. But still not fan of the cost more than anything.
I won't forbid my kids from going on one, but as for having one in our yard I am 1,000% Nay for injury reasons. Also, ditto the pp, I think they raise your homeowner's.
Even if I was okay with the idea of it, it's not something I would want to spend money on because I do think it would be a novelty and the excitement would wear off.
The one at MIL's house is out year round. I think it has been there 8 years and the basic trampoline is fine. The netting needs to be replaced, though, so it is off limits to the kids until we do that.
We've only had one notable injury in six years. ILs bought it for our niece when she started cheering and I don't think she was ever injured on it. If we had a big enough yard that I wouldn't be staring at it all of the time I wouldn't mind having one, but it is fine as an occasional treat at Grandma's.
Not a chance in hell.
DH actually just bought one for DD's birthday, and I pleaded with him to take it back. Our yard isn't level enough in the first place, and there's too much chance of injury IMO. I emailed him this article: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012/09/24/trampolines-too-dangerous-for-home-use-pediatricians-group-says-in-policy-statement/57835390/1. While he thinks I'm crazy and too overprotective and will probably hold a grudge forever about it, he did take it back.
They don't have to being doing crazy flips to land wrong and break an ankle.
I have a friend on another board, and they have one. They just had a birthday party at their house, and one of the little friends broke her ankle on their trampoline. Now they have to worry about liability, and they're not sure what to do.
My fear is more about more than one kid jumping at a time. Cracking heads, landing at different times and the tramp being taught when the second kid lands making their fall hard rather than springy. No thanks. I will take my risks with the pool
)
yeah my kid is the super daring one who would probably injure herself! So I certainly would worry of we had one but its definitely an issue to worry about friends. It's certainly something that if you had one anytime friends were over they would want to use it. I never had one growing up but friends did and I would always want to use theirs anytime I was over.
In high school, my sister got hurt on a backyard trampoline. This same sister went to college on a full athletic scholarship for gymnastics, so she was very familiar with trampolines. But it was a case of multiple people bouncing at different times.
I also think they look trashy in a yard which is really the main reason I would never get one.
Our next door neighbors have one and I can't stand the thing. They put it up last year and so far we've been lucky with no major injuries but there have been a handful of times that the kids crack their heads together or something like that. It also looks terrible.
Luckily this year it seems the novelty has worn off a bit and the neighborhood kids flock to our yard to play with our old fashioned sandbox and tricycles and swing set. Makes my life a lot easier.

In one month at a particular hospital, I saw 2 kids with some aspects of spinal cord injuries from a trampoline and broken bones aren't uncommon. DH knows our children are NEVER allowed on one. It's one of my automatic, do not ever ask and if I ever find out he let them on one, we need a serious discussion. I can handle broken bones from sports, etc but a spinal cord injury...it's never worth the risk. Likewise, our neighbors have one in their FENCED backyard and other kids still come over to use it...it'd be too much of a liability. Sorry, it's a never, ever in our book (along with playing football).
