Breaking Up with Ben & Jerry

I have the worst sweet tooth ever. I know, it's ok in moderation. The problem is that it's not in moderation. I can eat a pint of Ben & Jerry's every night and never get sick of it. Now my problem is that my body craves the sugar.I keep easy sugar out of the house but find myself stopping at the store for my fix.

Any advise to curb the sugar cravings?

    Up your protein intake.
  • Have you tried replacing sugar with more natural sweeteners, such as stevia or xylitol?  I'm not sure if you have an ice cream maker or very powerful blender (like a Vitamix), but then you can make your own ice cream and sweeten them that way.  There are also other ice cream options where they have less sugar so maybe you can wean your way off (the ice cream equivalent of watering down your juice/soda).  I have read that our bodies become addicted to sugar and so getting off of it is tough, but usually after 3 days or so of not having sugar, you start to feel (and look) so much better.

  • Blend 2 frozen bananas with 1 T peanut butter and 1 T cocoa powder in a blender until smooth.

It's delicious!! I also add walnuts to it sometimes. mmmmmm

  • I get really bad chocolate cravings too. The above suggestion with the frozen bananas is a great one. What works for me is to buy what I need for less-fattening treats. For example, Skinny Cow ice cream bars. I don't eat or buy regular ice cream like Ben & Jerry's anymore. But after dinner sometimes I really, really want something sweet so I have vanilla soy milk with cereal and raspberries, a skinny cow, or even sometimes a few graham crackers with a small amount of peanut butter and a few chocolate chips on top. I don't feel guilty about these treats because I am working out regularly now and I don't want to deprive myself. And I don't want to overdo it on cookies, cakes, ice cream, etc. I avoid that stuff now. Sometimes if my craving is more mild I can have an even healthier treat such as a greek yogurt parfait with raspberries,a drizzle of honey, and a little scoop of granola. Serve it in a martini glass and you really feel like you're treating yourself. Or chocolate milk made with skim milk.

Also, I drink LOTS of water when I have cravings. I don't know why, but I swear that when I'm thirsty that's when my cravings are the worst.
